BETHLEHEM, Pa. ââ'¬" Sophomore Madison Cunningham (Davie, Fla.) made a career-high 14 saves to secure her first win of the season as No. 12 Penn State held off a late Lehigh run to secure a 14-13 victory in nonconference action this afternoon from the Ulrich Sports Complex.
Penn State (1-1) got down early as Kellie Gough opened the scoring for Lehigh (1-1) just 1:37 into the contest, but the Nittany Lions used three straight goals including a pair from freshman Quinn Nicolai (Moorestown, N.J.) to grab the 3-1 lead at the 17:20 mark of the first half.
Lehigh answered with a 4-1 run of their own to grab the 5-4 lead after back-to-back goals from Courtney Henig just 58 seconds apart midway through the first half.
The teams then traded a pair of goals before back-to-back free-position tallies by senior's Katie O'Donnell (West Chester, Pa.) and Shelby Wells (Timonium, Md.) gave Penn State the 7-6 edge at the 8:25 mark.
The Mountain Hawks fought back scoring the next three goals to grab the 9-7 lead with 5:08 remaining in the opening half, but the Nittany Lions used a 5-0 run over the next 6:14 to end the first half and begin the second half grabbing the largest lead of the game, 12-9, at the 27:50 mark of the second half.
Sophomore Shannon Moore (West Chester, Pa.) used a nifty move to register her first career goal followed by a pair from junior Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.) to close out the first half with the 10-9 advantage.
O'Donnell opened the second half scoring just 24 seconds in and sophomore Maria Auth (Street, Md.) followed with her second of the game at the 27:50 mark for the 12-9 lead.
From there the game slowed into more of a defensive battle as the teams traded goals until the Mountain Hawks scored back-to-back goals just 64 seconds apart to cut the deficit to a single-goal at 14-13 after an Autumn Ryan goal with 1:28 to play in the second half.
Kellie Gough thought she had the equalizer with just 34 seconds remaining, but she was whistled for a dangerous shot and given a yellow card and the Nittany Lions were able to escape with the 14-13 victory.
Cunningham improves to 1-0 this season after her 14 save performance while her counterpart, Samantha Sagi, made 16 stops in net and falls to 1-1 on the year with the setback.
Penn State now returns home for three consecutive games starting on Wednesday against Duquesne at 4 p.m.
