WTN: Nittany Lions Drop Big Ten Opener

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.-- The Penn State women's tennis team dropped its conference opener to No. 14 Ohio State, 7-0. This was the first ranked opponent that team has played this season.


Ohio State clinched the doubles point with a win on court three. Bennett Dunn (Orlando, Fla.) and Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) battled the No. 15 ranked Anna Sanford and Shiori Fukuda, losing 6-4. Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) and Olivia Rohrbacher (Sandusky, Ohio) had their match against Mary Beth Hurley and Olivia Sneed go unfinished, 4-4. Hanna Wikberg (Stockholm, Sweden) and Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) fell to Emma DeCoste and Danielle Wolf, 7-5.


Ohio State led 1-0 after winning the doubles point, and never let go of the lead in singles. Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) fell to Anna Sanford 6-3, 6-1. Svarre was locked in a tight battle with No. 64 Fukuda, ultimately falling, 7-5, 7-5. Hanley took on the Buckeyes other ranked player, No. 72 Sneed, losing 6-1, 6-4. Smith was defeated by DeCoste, 6-3, 6-4. Rohrbacher fell to Hurley, 6-1, 6-1. Dunn lost to Wolf, 6-1, 6-3.


"Even though the score was 7-0, I felt we played really good tennis at a number of spots," said head coach Chris Cagle.


The team is now 4-4 on the season and 0-1 in the Big Ten. Up next, the team will take on Buffalo, at home on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 11 a.m.
