WGolf Travels to South Carolina for Briar's Creek Invite

March 17, 2018

Johns Island, S.C.- The Penn State women's golf team will continue their spring campaign in South Carolina for the 2018 Briar's Creek Invitational, hosted by the College of Charleston, on Monday and Tuesday, Mar. 19-20.

The tournament, in its sixth year, will take place at The Golf Club at Briar's Creek in Johns Island, S.C. The course is a par-72 and plays 6,101 yards. The 54-hole event will play a 36-18 format with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m. on Monday and 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday.

Penn State will be joined by Big Ten rivals No. 23 Illinois and Maryland. Boston College, Campbell, College of Charleston, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Georgetown, Kansas, North Carolina, Old Dominion, South Florida, Texas Tech and UNC Asheville comprise the rest of the 16-team field.

The Nittany Lions' six-girl line-up includes senior Ariana Coyle Diez (Mount Merrion, Dublin, Ireland) and juniors Lauren Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.), Jackie Rogowicz (Yardley, Pa.) and Cara Basso (Downingtown, Pa). Sophomores Maddy Herr (New Hope, Pa.) and Megan McLean (Lebanon, N.J.) will also take the road.

The team looks to improve upon its seventh-place finish at the Hurricane Invitational. Diez, the lone senior, led the team on the last day shooting only one-over 73. The seventh-place finish marked the sixth time this season, out of seven tournaments, that the team finished in the top ten.

According to Head Coach Denise St. Pierre, North Carolina, East Carolina, Texas Tech, Campbell, Illinois, Maryland, Kansas and College of Charleston are all top contenders in the field and will provide great competition for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State will begin the first of two rounds on Monday, Mar. 19, at 9:00 a.m. with a shotgun start. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.

There is still time to join the team in their efforts to raise funds and awareness for women's heart health through their campaign, Birdies For The Heart. For the spring, Penn State has 32 birdies with two regular season tournaments remaining on the schedule.
