UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ââ'¬" Penn State men's and women's divers are set to compete in the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships hosted by Rutgers Monday-Wednesday in Rutgers Aquatic Center.
The meet will determine the region's entries for the upcoming NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship meets.
Competition begins at noon Monday with the women's 3-meter and men's 1-meter events, and continues Tuesday at noon with the men's 3-meter and women's 1-meter events. Platform diving will be held Wednesday starting at 11 a.m.
NCAA schools are divided into five zones for diving based upon geographical location. Zone A consists of schools in Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
A total of 109 divers have qualified for the Zone A Championship on at least one board. Women had to post scores of at least 265 points to qualify for the zone meet on the one-meter board, 280 points to take part in the three-meter event and 225 points to compete in platform diving at the meet. Men were required at attain scores of at least 300 points on the one meter, 320 points on the three meter and 300 points in platform diving to advance to the zone meet on the respective boards.
On the men's side juniors Jack Crow (Bethesda, Md.) and Hector Garcia Boissier (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain) and freshman Bryce Hoch (Hatfield, Pa.) are eligible to complete in all three dives (1-meter, 3-meter, platform), while junior Connor Scanlon (Laurel, Md.) will compete in both the 1-meter and 3-meter.
On the women's side, sophomore Christina Crowell (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) and freshmen Emma Hellmann (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Kamryn Umbel (Potomac, Md.) are slated to compete in the 1-meter and 3-meter.
The format for the two springboard events consists of six dives for all entered divers with the top-18 finishers from the preliminary round advancing to the finals where each will again perform six dives. Scores from the preliminary round are carried over into the finals. The platform event features all entered divers taking 12 dives.
Zone A will send six men's divers on the 1-meter, five on the 3-meter and five in platform diving to the national championship, while the women will advance six divers from the 1-meter event, six from the 3-meter and five from the platform competitions to the NCAA meet.
Garcia Boissier leads the men's side, coming off school-record setting dives in the 1-meter and platform dives at the Big Ten Championships. He is seeking his third-consecutive NCAA Championships bid, while Crow is looking to return after qualifying as a freshman in 2016. Scanlon is seeking his first bid.
On the women's side, Crowell is competing in her second zone meet, while the freshmen are competing in their first.
Ohio State is hosting the NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships Mar. 14-17, while Minnesota is hosting the NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships Mar. 21-24.
