UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., -- The Penn State women's tennis team took on the No. 30 Michigan Wolverines, in Big Ten action today, falling 7-0.
In doubles, Michigan grabbed the point with two wins. Shannon Hanley (Kensington, M.D.) and Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) fell to Brienne Minor and Kate Fahey, 6-2. Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Olivia Rohrbacher (Sandusky, Ohio) fell to Chiara Lommer and Lera Patiuk, 6-3. Bennett Dunn (Orlando, Fla.) and Gabby O'Gorman (Wales, Australia) had their match go unfinished, but they were down 3-5, against Mira Ruder-Hook and Alyvia Jones when play ended.
In singles, Svarre was outmatched by No. 23 Fahey, 6-3, 6-2. O'Gorman pushed her match to the third set, but was outplayed by No. 93 Lommer, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (4). Hanley was in a tight match with Minor, but lost 6-3, 6-2. Smith was defeated in a close match against Jones, 7-5, 6-4. Dunn fell to Ruder-Hook, 6-2, 6-4. Michigan's Patiuk knocked off Wikberg in a close match, 6-4, 7-5.
"It was a tough match today against Michigan," said head coach Chris Cagle. "They're a good team and they showed why they are good today. I felt like they hit the ball really well and they made some things tough on us. But, at the same time, I felt like we showed some spots we're getting better at as well. Now we're getting into the real meat of the Big Ten season and we're hitting the road next weekend to go to Wisconsin and Minnesota so we just need to keep getting better. That'll help us get over the hump to get some of these wins."
Penn State moves to 6-10 overall on the season and 1-4 in the Big Ten. Up next, the team will travel to Madison, Wisc. to face the Badgers Friday, April 6 at 6:00 p.m. The Lions then travel to Minneapolis to take on the Minnesota Gophers Sunday, April 8 at 10:30 a.m.
