WEST LAYFAYETTE, Ind.- The Penn State women's tennis team took on No. 50 Purdue today, in Big Ten action. The Boilermakers came out on top, 5-2, over the Nittany Lions in a closely contested conference match.
In doubles, the team went 2-0 to clinch the doubles point. Bennett Dunn (Orlando, Fla.) and Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) knocked off Alex Sabe and Seira Shimizu, 6-1. Olivia Rohrbacher (Sandusky, Ohio) and Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) defeated Ena Babic and Zala Dovnik, 6-4. Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) and Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) had their match go unfinished, but the duo was up 5-4 when play ended.
In singles, the team went 1-5. Svarre dropped her match to Ambrosio, 6-1, 6-2. O'Gorman was knocked off by Babic, 6-0, 7-5. Hanley was defeated by Sabe in a tight match, 6-4, 6-4. Smith fell to Shimizu, 6-4, 6-1. Dunn was locked in a tight match with Calkins, but ultimately fell 6-3, 7-6. Wikberg was victorious over Dovnik, 6-4, 6-1.
"Our doubles has been getting better and better and that showed today," said head coach Chris Cagle. "In singles, we fought hard but Purdue played a little better than us today. We need to take the fight that we have and execute a little better on Sunday vs. Indiana. This team has shown heart all year and I expect the same on Sunday."
Overall, the Nittany Lions are now 7-12 and 2-6 in the Big Ten. The team will be back in action Sunday, April 15 when they face Indiana at 11:00 a.m.
