WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.-- The No. 49 Penn State men's tennis team took on the Purdue Boilermakers in Big Ten action this evening. The team roared back for a 4-3 victory over the Boilermakers.
In doubles, the team lost the point, going 2-1. Constant De La Bassetiere (Reims, France) and Gabriel Nemeth (Brasilia, Brazil) fell to No. 75 Athell Bennett and Gergely Madarasz, 6-4. Christian Lakoseljac (King City, Ontario) and Ben Lieb (Newtown Square, Pa.) defeated Mateo Julio and and Dominik Sochureck, 6-3. Christos Antonopoulos (Athens, Greece) and Matt Galush (Cary, N.C.) were locked in a tight battle with Stephan Koenigsfest and Maksymilian Raupuk, but ultimately fell, 7-6 (7-4).
The Nittany Lions went 4-2 in singles. Lakoseljac clinched the match with a win over No. 111 Madarasz 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. De La Bassetiere outmatched Raupuk, 6-2, 6-3. Nemeth got a dominant win over Julio, 6-2, 6-4. Antonopoulos fell to Bennett 6-2, 6-3. B. Lieb got the win over Rodriguez, 7-6, 6-2. Zach Lieb (Newtown Square, Pa.) was defeated by Renan Hanayama, 6-2, 6-2.
"First of all, great job to Purdue for making this a great college match," said associate head coach Paul Tobin. "Could not have been any closer. I was surprised we lost the doubles point, I thought we were looking really good in practice. Tied up at 3-3, Christian Lakoseljac came through in the thrid set and we are all very proud of his Lion fight."
Overall, the team is now 15-10 and 5-5 in Big Ten action. The team will next take on No. 46 Indiana in Bloomington, Ind. on Sunday, Apr. 22 at 12:00 p.m.
