UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-- The Penn State women's tennis team took on the No. 12 Northwestern Wildcats in Big Ten action today. The Wildcats came out on top, 6-1, in a closely contested conference match.

In doubles, the team lost the point, after going 0-2. Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) and Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) took on No. 4 Erin Larner and Maddie Lipp, falling 6-1. Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Olivia Rohrbacher (Sandusky, Ohio) were locked in a tight match against No. 31 Alex Chatt and Lee Or, the match went unfinished, 4-4. Bennett Dunn (Orlando, Fla.) and Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) fell to Julie Byrne and Rheeya Doshi, 6-2.

In singles, the Nittany Lions hung close in several matches, going 1-5. Svarre took on No. 39 Larner, falling 7-5, 6-1. Hanley took on No. 70 Lipp and pushed her to the brink, but ultimately fell, 7-5, 6-4. Smith was locked in a tight one with Or, but fell 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). Dunn was defeated by Byrne, 6-3, 6-2. Hanna Wikberg (Stockholm, Sweden) fell to Chatt, 6-2, 6-4. Rohrbacher got the lone win of the day, defeating Inci Ogut, 6-4, 6-3.

"First of all, credit to Northwestern, they are a good team, they've had a really strong year," said head coach Chris Cagle. "Neither team had, played an outdoor match in awhile, both teams had to adjust to the conditions. I thought we did a pretty good job of that, especially in the beginning part of singles. That part, is something to build off of. We just need to take care of having a few less ups and downs throughout the match and then we'll be able to close the gap on a lot of these matches. Lastly, I'm pretty happy for Olivia Rohrbacher, she hadn't been in the lineup for a little while and hopped out there and was able to close out her match, so I give her a lot of credit. I'm looking forward to the whole team playing on Senior Day on Sunday."

Overall, the Nittany Lions are now 7-14 and 2-8 in the Big Ten. Up next, the team will honor its seniors on Sunday as they take on No. 15 Illinois at 11:00 a.m. The match on Sunday is expected to be played outdoors at the Sarni Tennis Center.
