Madison, Wis.- Penn State women's golfer junior Cara Basso (Downingtown, Pa.) climbed two spots on the leaderboard shooting a 73 (plus-1) in the third round to complete the NCAA Madison Regional tied for 42nd place in the 96-player field.
The tournament, held at the University Ridge Golf Course, was new territory for Basso who had never played on the course before. After shooting four-over par on the front nine, Basso came back with an eagle on hole 10 and birdies on holes 11 and 16 to round out the back nine three-under par.
"I had a really great experience this week and played some good golf," Basso commented, "I'm excited to take this momentum into my final season at Penn State and continue where I left off. My individual goal for next year will definitely be to return to regionals and share the experience with my team."
Basso is one of five individuals tied for the 42nd slot. Her three-round score of 220 (plus-4) placed her ahead of individuals Connie Jaffrey (Kansas State), Pun Chanachai (New Mexico State) and Elsa Moberly (Eastern Kentucky). Toledo's Pinyada Kuvanun and Indiana's Erin Harper pulled ahead of Basso by four and seven shots respectively.
The three individuals moving on to the NCAA Championships are Nicole Schroeder (Oregon State), Gabby Curtis (Wisconsin) and Erin Harper (Indiana). The top six teams from the Madison Regional moving to the championship are Duke, Virginia, Southern California, Arizona State, Ohio State and Northwestern.
The 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship will take place May 18-23 at the Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
