Alum Ryan Set for European Championships

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State men's swimming alumnus Shane Ryan will compete in the 2018 European Aquatics Championships for Ireland, starting Friday in the Tollcross International Swimming Centre in Glasgow, Scotland.

Ryan, a 2018 national champion and 2016 Olympian for Ireland and an All-American, Big Ten Champion and school-record holder during his time at Penn State, will compete individually in the 50-meter backstroke (Friday), 100m freestyle (Saturday) and 100m back (Sunday). Ryan holds the Irish national records in all three events.

In Europe, Ryan currently ranks 12th for the year in both the 100m back (53.96) and 100m free (48.68).

Ryan, a native of Havertown, Pennsylvania, holds dual citizenship in the United States and Ireland. His father was born in Ireland and Ryan spent the 2015-16 academic year in Ireland to establish residency there and focus on training for the 2016 Rio Olympics. Ryan returned to Penn State for his senior year during 2016-17.
