Freshman wide receiver KJ Hamler (Pontiac, Mich.) has been named to the Paul Hornung Award weekly honor roll after his versatile effort at Pitt. The Paul Hornung Award is presented to the most versatile player in major college football.
Hamler accounted for 145 all-purpose yards via rushing receiving and kick return in the 51-6 win at Pittsburgh Saturday night. The freshman started his day with his first career rush, which went for 32 yards and a touchdown on Penn State's first possession. He is the first Penn State wideout with a rushing touchdown since DeAndre Thompkins against Rutgers in 2015.
The Pontiac, Michigan native then grabbed his second touchdown reception of the season in the second quarter on a 14-yard throw from Trace McSorley. He finished the game with three catches for 40 yards. Hamler is the first Penn State wide receiver to have a rushing touchdown and receiving touchdown in the same game since Derrick Williams accomplished the feat against Indiana in 2008. Hamler was also key in the return game against the Panthers with three returns for 73 yards, including a long return of 28 yards.
