Women's Golf Set For Princeton Invitational This Weekend

PRINCETON, N.J. – Coming off a victory at their home invitational last weekend, the Penn State women's golf team travels to the 21st annual Princeton Invitational for a two-day tournament on Saturday, September 29 and Sunday, September 30.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Penn State closed the Nittany Lion Invitational with a school record round of 9-under, 279 breaking its previous record of 5-under, 283 which was achieved during the 2012 Nittany Lion Invitational.
  • The Nittany Lions finished the tournament at even-par through three rounds with a score of 864, just two strokes off the school record for lowest 54-hole team total.
  • Senior Lauren Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.) recorded a personal-best 5-under, 67 during the final round of play to help lift the Lions to victory.

B1G GOLFER OF THE WEEK

  • Playing as an individual last weekend, freshman Sarah Willis (Eaton, Ohio) carded a tournament and 54-hole school record 11-under, 205 earning individual medalist honors.
  • The freshman was named the Big Ten women's Golfer of the Week this past week for her efforts.
  • Willis registered 16 birdies to pace the field while adding one eagle during her three rounds of competition. She opened her final round with five-straight birdies and finished 5-under, 67 to share the tournament low round of the week with Waller. Her final round score also ties the 18-hole low round in tournament and school history.
  • Willis leads the team with a 70.60 stroke average through the first five rounds of her collegiate career.

THE TEAM

  • The Nittany Lions are sticking with four of the same five that led them to victory last weekend as Waller along with fellow seniors Cara Basso (Downingtown, Pa.) and Jackie Rogowicz (Yardley, Pa.) join junior Megan McLean (Lebanon, N.J.) while Willis is reinserted into the starting five after playing as an individual last weekend.
  • Junior Maddy Herr (New Hope, Pa.) will also get the nod this weekend playing as an individual in the 75 player field.

ABOUT THE PRINCETON INVITATIONAL

  • Held at the Springdale Golf Club in Princeton, N.J. the course is a par-72 playing 6,100 yards.
  • This marks the 21st annual event with Georgetown as the defending champion.
  • The tournament features two 18-hole rounds with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
  • Penn State will be paired with Princeton and Harvard and will tee off between 8:30 a.m. – 9:06 a.m. on Saturday.

2018 PRINCETON INVITATIONAL FIELD

  • Penn State joins 11 other teams vying for the championship this weekend including seven teams who just competed in the Nittany Lion Invitation in Georgetown, Navy, Penn, Rollins, Seton Hall, Yale and Youngstown State.
  • The additional four teams are host Princeton as well as Columbia, Dartmouth and Harvard.

The Nittany Lions travel to the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational hosted by the University of Kentucky next weekend from Friday, October 5 through Sunday, October 7.
