PRINCETON, N.J. – Led by senior Cara Basso's (Downingtown, Pa.) 1-under final round of 71, the Penn State women's golf team secured its second-straight tournament championship earning first place at the Princeton Invitational with a score of 588 (12-over).
Basso registered rounds of 75 and 71 to finish the tournament at 2-over (146) and tie for sixth along with classmate Lauren Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.) who carded back-to-back rounds of 1-over (73) for her second-straight top-10 finish of the season.
Junior Megan McLean (Lebanon, N.J.) remained consistent for the Nittany Lions firing her second-straight 74 to finish in a tie for tenth place at 148 (4-over) marking her second-consecutive top-ten finish.
Senior Jackie Rogowicz (Yardley, Pa.) rounded out the team scores for the day with her 4-over 76, finishing the tournament in a tie for 29th at 9-over (153). Freshman Sarah Willis (Eaton, Ohio) struggled on this Sunday registering an 8-over 80 finishing the tournament in a tie for 24th at 8-over, 152.
Junior Maddy Herr (New Hope, Pa.) had a strong showing as an individual this weekend finishing the tournament in a tie for 20th position after rounds of 77 (5-over) and 74 (2-over). The junior finished her final round on Sunday with back-to-back birdies.
As a team Penn State collected 16 birdies on the day and 28 for the tournament running its season total to 140.
"We had a few hiccups [today], but all-in-all we managed to play well enough to get this championship," commented head coach Denise St. Pierre. "I am very proud at the way both Lauren [Waller] and Cara [Basso] stayed strong as well as the way Megan [McLean] was able to hang in there during both rounds when things could have gone another way."
"We will draw lessons from this and move on to get ready for our next tournament."
The Nittany Lions return to action next weekend as they travel to Kentucky for the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational with single rounds each day from Friday, October 5 through Sunday, October 7.
