UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Inclement weather cancelled the Nittany Lions' last two tournaments, but the Penn State men's golf team will look to defend its 2017 title at the 21st annual Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. East Tennessee State plays host to the tournament in Jonesborough, Tennessee, which is set for Friday-Sunday, Oct. 12-14.
Penn State will compete in the three-day, 54-hole tournament for the seventh-straight year with 18 holes of play each day on the Blackthorn Club at the Ridges, a par-72, 7,147-yard course. The Nittany Lions will tee off on hole No. 1 beginning at 10:10 a.m. ET.
The highly competitive 14-team field includes eight programs that participated in the 2018 NCAA Championships. Five teams, including Penn State, are ranked or receiving votes in the latest Golf Coaches Association of America poll.
"We are grateful to Coach Warren through the years for his invitations to the Bank of Tennessee (tournament)," said Penn State head golf coach Greg Nye. "He, his committees, and welcoming members have given of themselves so much to shape this into a highlight event for college golfers and coaches.
"When we arrive in Johnson City, they will be experiencing the back end of Hurricane Michael. We have had to face soggy conditions more than our share this fall. We very much look forward to competing."
Penn State won the 2017 event (272-277-282=833), a total that ranked second all-time on the Nittany Lions' list of best 54-hole tournaments. That score included a round of 272 on the second day (10/14/2017), for PSU's fifth-best all-time. Penn State won the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate for the first time in 2015.
Senior Charles Huntzinger won the individual title for 2016 Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate and fired a 66 on day two of the event. In 2017, the Duluth, Georgia, native tied his career-low 64 in the second round, a score that ranks second all-time on the Nittany Lions' list of best individual rounds.
Huntzinger (205) and senior JD Hughes (202), who finished third and second, respectively, in the 2017 tournament, are set for this weekend's lineup. Senior Ryan Dornes and juniors Ryan Davis and Alec Bard also earn starts. Sophomore Lukas Clark will compete as an individual.
