Nittany Lion Duo Heads to ITA Regionals Doubles Finals

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State men's tennis ended day four at ITA Regionals with one doubles pair remaining in competition and 24 total wins.

One of two singles players left in competition at the beginning of day four, Christos Antonopoulos (Athens, Greece) lost a hard-fought match to Alex Ribeiro of Virginia Tech 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 in the round of 16 to end his time in the tournament.

The other remaining singles player, Constant De La Bassetiere (Reim, France) faced the University of Virginia's Matthew Lord, easily earning the win 7-5, 7-5. De La Bassetiere then advanced to the quarterfinals where he met the No. 3 seed, Aziz Kijamehovic of Old Dominion University. De La Bassetiere suffered a tough loss 6-1, 6-1, to end his times in singles.

"At this point in the tournament every player is tough.," said head coach Jeff Zinn. "Today in Constant's second match, his opponent played flawless tennis and deserved to move into the semifinals tomorrow. It's nice that Constant still has a chance to win the tournament in doubles with Gabe, and we are really looking forward to that match tomorrow."

The duo of Matt Galush (Cary, N.C.) and Ben Lieb (Newtown Square, Pa) did not play their match against Gabriel Nemeth (Brasilia, Brazil) and De La Bassetiere in the semifinals due to injury.

De La Bassetiere/Nemeth will go on to the doubles finals and have a chance to represent the Blue and White at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Surprise, Ariz. The pair will take on in-state rival Temple's Alberto Caceres Casas and Mark Wallner on Monday at 11:30 a.m.

"I think all in all it was a really good weekend," said associate head coach Paul Tobin. "For not having any fall match experience, I think the guys did really well. We've never had a team in the finals at ITA regionals before, this is what they've worked hard for."

Updates on the matches and all tournament information will be available on the tournament page.
