Penn State Women’s Swimming & Diving Holds Lead on Virginia Tech

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – The Penn State women's swimming & diving team came out strong Friday evening against host Virginia Tech, leading the Hokies 85-82 after the first day of a two-day double dual meet in the Christiansburg Aquatic Center, but the Nittany Lions trail Big Ten opponent No. 15 Ohio State, 112-55.

Nittany Lion Relays
Oliva Jack, Katrina Kuhn, Meredith Ledwith and Kathleen Sheridan finished fourth in the women's 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:35.47 for the top Penn State relay performance of the night.

Top Swims
Penn State senior captain Ally McHugh led a 1-2-3 Nittany Lion sweep in the 500 free with season-best times. McHugh finished the race in 4:49.95 followed by Camryn Barry (4:54.08) and freshman Madison Murtagh (4:54.16).
 
Carly Hart and Jack trailed an Ohio State swimmer in the 100 breaststroke but took first and second against Virginia Tech with times of 1:03.23 and 1:04.02, respectively. Hart's time was a season best. 
 
Maddie Hart led Penn State in the 200 backstroke coming in second overall with a season-best time of 2:00.51. Hart (2:02.82), McHugh (2:04.02) and freshman Brooke Matthias (2:04.23) then went 1-2-3 ahead of Virginia Tech in the 200 fly.
 
Top Dives
Junior Christina Crowell took third place in the women's 3-meter dive scoring 266.30 points.
 
Next Up
Penn State will return Saturday at 11 a.m. for the second meet against the Hokies and Buckeyes.
