EVANSTON, Ill. – The Penn State men's soccer team (2-6-2, 1-2-2 Big Ten) and Northwestern (4-5-3, 0-3-2 Big Ten) played for 110 total minutes Saturday evening at Martin Stadium, but neither team was able to find the back of the net to end the game in a 0-0 draw.
"As with every Big Ten game, this was a hotly contested, very even game throughout the 90 minutes and the overtime," said head coach Jeff Cook. "I think that our players deserve a lot of credit for creating some excellent chances to score in overtime on the road in a difficult environment at Northwestern."
The entire 90 minutes of regulation was evenly matched, with back-and-forth attempts on the pitch as both the Nittany Lions and the Wildcats fought to hold possession.
Northwestern outshot Penn State 14-9 after regulation, but the Nittany Lions came out in full force in overtime, firing off two great looks in the first minute.
Sophomore Ethan Beckford and freshman Jeremy Rafanello both were able to get in front of Wildcat defenders for a look at the net, but Northwestern goalkeeper Miha Miskovic stopped both balls.
Beckford had another prime opportunity for the golden goal in the box in the second overtime before he got tripped up and Miskovic could make the save.
The shot count ended with the Wildcats narrowly outshooting the Nittany Lions, 17-16. Both teams had six corner kicks.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Josh Levine made seven saves in regulation and didn't face any shots on goal in the overtime periods to maintain a clean sheet for the second time this season.
Up next the Nittany Lions return to Happy Valley for a three-game homestand, starting with nonconference visitor Stony Brook on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. Admission is free for all fans for regular season games at Jeffrey Field.
