POSTGAME NOTES: Penn State vs. Wisconsin

TEAM

  • Penn State now leads the series with the Badgers 10-9, including four-straight victories dating back to 2012.
  • Penn State clinched its 14th consecutive winning season today with a 7-3 mark through 10 games. Only four FBS teams have had a winning season each of the last 14 years (Penn State, Oklahoma, Boise State, LSU). Wisconsin, Virginia Tech, USC and Florida State can also achieve the feat this season.
  • James Franklin has guided his teams to a winning record each of the last seven seasons (2 at Vanderbilt, 5 at Penn State).
  • Penn State extended its winning streak against teams from the Big Ten West to 10 games, dating to an overtime win against Minnesota in 2016.
  • The Nittany Lions went 3-for-3 in the red zone today (2 TD, 1 FG) which improves their season mark to 38-for-40 (33 TD, 5 FG, 1 missed FG, 1 turnover).
  • Penn State held Wisconsin to just 12 first downs, the fewest allowed by the Nittany Lions since giving up 11 last year at Maryland.
  • Wisconsin's 10 points are its fewest points scored since scoring seven points against Michigan in a 14-7 loss in 2016.
  • The 60 passing yards allowed by Penn State are the fewest since allowing 55 to Pitt earlier this year.
  • Penn State held Wisconsin to its fewest passing yards since having 46 passing yards against Nebraska in 2014.
  • After allowing 79 yards on Wisconsin's opening possession, the Nittany Lions defense clamped down and only gave up 190 additional yards for the rest of the game.
  • Penn State held Wisconsin to just 269 yards of total offense, 178.2 yards below the Badgers' season average of 447.2. This included holding the Badgers' running game to 209 yards, which is 64 yards below their average of 273 per game.
  • Penn State held the Badgers to their fewest total yards (269) since having 159 against Michigan in 2016.
  • Penn State forced a season-high four turnovers in today's game, the most since forcing four vs. Indiana last season.
  • Penn State only gave up nine completions today, the lowest single-game total by an opponent since giving up nine to Pitt earlier this season.
  • The five sacks by the Nittany Lions were the most since Penn State recorded six at Indiana earlier this season. Prior to today's game, Wisconsin had only allowed 13 sacks all year.
  • Penn State had five field goal attempts today for the first time since attempting five against Michigan in a four-overtime win in 2013.
  • WR Jahan Dotson made his first career start today, the 16th different Nittany Lion to make their first start this season. Dotson is the first true freshman to start at wide receiver since WR Saeed Blacknall in 2014.

 
OFFENSE
 
Trace McSorley

  • QB Trace McSorley won his 29th game as starting quarterback today, tying him with Todd Blackledge and Tony Sacca for the most wins as a starting quarterback at Penn State.
  • McSorley threw for 180 yards today, giving him 9,240 for his career which moves him into 11th place in the Big Ten record book. He passed Connor Cook (2012-15) and Kirk Cousins (2008-11), both of Michigan State. Next up on the list is Kyle Orton from Purdue (2001-04) with 9,194 yards.
  • McSorley's one touchdown pass give him 72 for his career, which ties him with John Navarre of Michigan (2000-03) and Adam Weber of Minnesota (2007-10) for sixth place in the Big Ten record books.
  • McSorley had 169 yards of total offense today (160 passing, 9 rushing) which moves him to seventh in the Big Ten in career total offense. He passed Denard Robinson of Michigan (2009-12), Tommy Armstrong Jr. of Nebraska (2013-16), Nathan Scheelhaase of Illinois (2010-13) and Juice Williams of Illinois (2006-09) with today's effort.

 
Miles Sanders

  • RB Miles Sanders rushed for 159 yards today, marking his fourth 100-yard rushing game of his career. He last had 100+ rushing yards against Michigan State earlier this season (162).
  • Sanders' 159 yards rushing today give him 1,007 for the season, marking the 26th 1,000-yard individual rushing season in the Penn State annals. Sanders is the 16th different 1,000-yard rusher.
  • With his effort today, Sanders moved into 31st place on Penn State's career rushing yardage chart with 1,382 yards. He passed Steve Smith, Akeel Lynch, Gary Brown, Stephfon Green and Steve Geise against the Badgers.

 

DeAndre Thompkins

  • WR DeAndre Thompkins grabbed his second receiving touchdown of the season and sixth of his career in the first quarter.

 
Jahan Dotson

  • WR Jahan Dotson had a career-long 30-yard reception today. His previous long grab was a 19-yard catch last week at Michigan.
  • Dotson set a career high with 39 receiving yards, bettering 29 yards against Michigan.
  • Dotson's two receptions matched his career best.  He also had two catches against Michigan.

 
Justin Shorter

  • WR Justin Shorter made his first career catch in the second quarter, a 3-yard grab.

 
Pat Freiermuth

  • With three catches, TE Pat Freiermuth has a reception in nine consecutive games.
  • Freiermuth tied a career-high with three catches.  He had three catches in three previous games this season with the last coming against Michigan.

 
KJ Hamler

  • WR KJ Hamler grabbed five receptions, giving him at least one catch in all 10 games to start his career.
  • Hamler tied a career high with five catches.  This was his third game with five catches with the last coming against Iowa.

 
DEFENSE
 
Robert Windsor

  • DT Robert Windsor tied a career high with six tackles. He had six earlier this season at Illinois.
  • Windsor also had a career-high two sacks today. His previous high was 1.5 also against Illinois.

 
Yetur Gross-Matos

  • DE Yetur Gross-Matos had his second career fumble recovery in the opening stanza. He recovered a fumble last year vs. Georgia State.
  • Gross-Matos had a sack today, extending his streak to five games with at least half a sack.
  • Gross-Matos forced a fumble on that sack, his second career forced fumble.  He also forced one against Michigan State.
  • The sophomore earned his fifth game this season with 2.0 or more tackles for loss.

 
Shareef Miller

  • DE Shareef Miller tied a career mark with two sacks today. He previously had two on two occasions, last vs. Kent State earlier this year.
  • It marks Miller's third career game with two sacks.
  • Miller also had a fumble recovery, the second of his career and first since recovering one at Ohio State last year.

 
Amani Oruwariye

  • CB Amani Oruwariye grabbed his third interception late in the second quarter and eighth of his career.

 
Nick Scott

  • S Nick Scott recorded the third interception of the season and of his career late in the fourth quarter.

 
Cam Brown

  • LB Cam Brown had a pass breakup today for the sixth time this season and seventh time in his career. He last had a pass breakup last week at Michigan.

 
PJ Mustipher

  • DT PJ Mustipher tied a career high with two tackles, his fourth game this year with two tackles.  His last multi-tackle game came against Michigan State.

Jake Pinegar

  • K Jake Pinegar booted a 49-yard field goal in the first quarter, tying his career long which he set against Iowa earlier this season.
  • Pinegar tied a career high with three made field goals, which he had done on two separate occasions this year. His last game with three made field goals was against Iowa.
  • Pinegar set a career mark with five field goal attempts.

 
Blake Gillikin

  • P Blake Gillikin dropped one punt inside the 10, giving him 35 punts inside of the 10 and 65 inside of the 20 in his career.

 
C.J. Thorpe

  • OL/DL C.J. Thorpe had his first career kick return in the third quarter, good for 10 yards.
