UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-- The Penn State women's tennis team will open its spring season this Sunday, Jan. 13 at 11 a.m. hosting Navy in the Indoor Tennis Center. This will be the third straight year Penn State has faced Navy in the season opener.
Penn State has defeated Navy in the last two season openers, 7-0 in 2017 and 4-3 in 2018. This will be the Midshipmen's opening match of the season.
"Each year is a new journey and I am excited to see what this team can go out and take in regards to our play on court," said head coach Chris Cagle. "I have been impressed with the commitment shown by the team as they have come back from the winter break. You can tell that they have been committed to their tennis on and off court as it has shown over our first few practices. Sunday will be a great opportunity for us against Navy who pushed us very hard last year. I hope that we have a great crowd out on Sunday and look forward to being back in the competitive atmosphere of the spring dual match season!"
Junior classmates Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) and Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) have been tabbed as captains to lead the team this year. Penn State returns six players from last year and will continue to integrate four new players.
Smith led the Nittany Lions in singles play in the fall, going 11-5. Sophomore Olivia Rohrbacher (Sandusky, Ohio) had a team-high nine doubles wins with three different partners.
In the fall, the Midshipmen were led by freshman Kacey Moore, who went 9-1 in singles matches. Moore teamed up with classmate Annalise Klopfer to lead the team in doubles, going 6-1.
Up next, Penn State will stay at home next weekend to take on Pittsburgh on Friday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m. Additionally, the Nittany Lions will host a double header on Sunday, Jan. 20 as they take on Temple at 11 a.m. followed by Bucknell at 4:30 p.m.
