T&F Preview: Penn State Tune-Up

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State track & field program will host one final indoor meet prior to championship week with the Penn State Tune-Up on Saturday, Feb. 16 starting at 11:30 a.m. at the Multi-Sport Facility & Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.

TEAMS COMPETING
Penn State will welcome athletes from West Virginia, UMBC, Delaware Valley, Morgan State, PSU-Brandywine, Messiah, and PSU-Fayette.

THE BOWERMAN WATCH LIST
Junior Danae Rivers was named to The Bowerman 2019 Women's Mid-Indoor Watch List as announced by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Feb. 6. Rivers is the first female student-athlete in program history to be named to the watch list.

IN THE RANKINGS
In the fourth week of the USTFCCCA NCAA Indoor National Rating Index, the women's team moved up 11 spots to No. 8.

RECORD BOOK PERFORMANCES
The Nittany Lions have not been short of record achievements so far in the 2019 indoor track & field season, etching eleven performances in to the record books.

Danae Rivers has set three school records this season, in the 800-meter run, 1,000-meter run and the mile. Her 1,000-meter run time of 2:38.58 is also the collegiate record, and her mile time of 4:29.47 set at the prestigious Millrose Games is the 10th-fastest time in collegiate history.

Last weekend at the Husky Classic, senior Tim McGowan ran a school record 13:46.49 in the men's 5K. At the Tiger Paw Invite, freshman Alexis Holmes recorded the No. 3 time in the nation and the fourth-best time in Nittany Lion indoor history with a 52.58 in the women's 400-meter dash.

At the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup on Feb. 2, Morgan Shigo set a PR in the men's weight throw with a toss of 73-8.75 (22.47m) for the No. 2 mark in the record books.

Sophomore Will Henderson and senior Maddie Holmberg each have two 2019 marks in the record books. Henderson set the school record in the men's 60-meter dash with a time of 6.65 at the Simmons-Harvey Big Ten Invite on Jan. 19. He also set a PR in the long jump at 25-5.5 (7.76m) to tie the No. 4 distance in the program record books. Holmberg scored a personal-best 4219 points in the women's pentathlon at the Penn State National Open on Jan. 25 for the second-best total in program history. She also owns the No. 5 mark in school history in the women's long jump with a distance of 20-5 (6.22m).

Finally, the women's distance medley team of Marissa Sheva, Alexis Holmes, Victoria Tachinski and Danae Rivers have the No. 3 time in program history at 11:09.85.

RETURNING ALL-AMERICANS
Penn State returns three All-Americans from the 2018 indoor track & field season. On the men's side, David Lucas is back for his junior year after capturing the gold medal in the weight throw. For the Penn State women, both Maddie Holmberg (pentathlon) and Danae Rivers (800-meter run) finished seventh in their respective events at last year's NCAA Championship.
