Women’s Tennis Opens Big Ten Play at Iowa

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-- The Penn State women's tennis team will travel to Iowa City, Iowa to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes to open its Big Ten schedule. The Nittany Lions (6-2) will take on the Hawkeyes (7-0) on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 12 p.m. ET in the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.

"It is exciting for our team to go on the road to Iowa for our first official Big Ten match," said head coach Chris Cagle. "Iowa is a well coached team that always competes hard so we know that we need to be ready to go on Sunday. We will put in the week of work to be ready and look forward to attack the challenge that is in front of us!"

LAST TIME OUT

Penn State traveled to Huntington, W.Va. to take on Furman and Marshall in the first of six road matches.

The Nittany Lions fell to Furman in a tightly contested match, 4-3. Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) defeated then No. 33 Katarina Kozarov, 7-5, 7-5 to post her second win over ranked opponent.

Penn State rebounded with a win over Marshall, 5-2. Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) collected her eighth straight win to remain unblemished this spring.

SCOUTING THE HAWKEYES

Iowa is off to a perfect start this season, standing at 7-0 overall and 4-0 at home. Before they face the Nittany Lions on Sunday, they will take on No. 10 Northwestern in a non-conference match. The match against Penn State will be the Hawkeyes Big Ten opener.  

Sophie Clark and Elise van Heuvelen lead the Hawkeyes with six singles wins a piece. Van Heuvelen and Adorabol Huckleby lead the team in doubles with a 6-1 mark.

Penn State and Iowa last met in 2018 where the Nittany Lions edged out the Hawkeyes, 5-2.

O'WOW, O'GORMAN

O'Gorman garnered the first singles ranking of her career clocking in at No. 98 in the ITA Division I Women's Tennis Rankings.

O'Gorman is 2-0 against ranked opponents this season and is 8-0 in doubles play with partner Olivia Rohrbacher (Sandusky, Ohio).

UP NEXT

The Nittany Lions will head into spring break, first traveling to No. 38 Columbia to take on the Lions on Saturday, Mar. 2 at 2 p.m. Then Penn State will travel to the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. to take on VCU on Thursday, Mar. 7 at 12 p.m.
