JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. – The Penn State women's golf team currently sits 11th in the 17-team field following the opening two rounds of the 2019 Briar's Creek Invitational at the Golf Club at Briar's Creek.
Penn State slipped three spots from the first round to the second round and currently stand 14-over following rounds of 289 (1-over) and 301 (13-over). Michigan State leads the tournament as one of only two teams under par sitting at 5-under followed closely by Indiana at 2-under while Campbell (even), Old Dominion (4-over) and College of Charleston and Long Beach State sit tied for fifth at 5-over to round out the top-5.
Senior Jackie Rogowicz (Yardley, Pa.) paced the Nittany Lions during the opening day of play firing a 1-under round of 71 to follow up her opening round of even par and currently sits tied for ninth in the 90 player field. The senior enjoyed the front nine during day one firing a combined 4-under with five birdies and an eagle and only three bogeys over the opening nine holes.
Freshman Sarah Willis (Eaton, Ohio) also registered a round under par with her 1-under, 71 on the opening 18 holes of the tournament and finished the day with a 3-over 76 to sit tied for 29th at 4-over par for the tournament.
Senior Megan McLean (Lebanon, N.J.) opened the tournament with an even-par round of 72 and finished the day 4-over and in a tie for 34th for the tournament along with junior Maddy Herr (New Hope, Pa.) who carded rounds of 75 (3-over) and 73 (1-over) while playing as an individual.
Senior classmates Cara Basso (Downingtown, Pa.) and Lauren Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.) each shot 2-over, 74 in the first round round, but struggled during the second round with scores of 78 (6-over) and 80 (8-over) to round out the scoring.
Penn State registered 26 total birdies and one eagle in the two rounds led by Rogowicz's six birdies and the lone eagle in the first round.
The Nittany Lions conclude the tournament tomorrow morning with a single round of play commencing with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
