Coomey Receives AHCA Assistant Coach Award

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State women's hockey assistant coach Allison Coomey was honored as the 2019 American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) Women's Hockey Assistant Coach Award winner this past week at the AHCA Convention in Naples, Florida.

The award recognizes the career body of work that Coomey has put together as one of the top assistant coaches in the sport.

Coomey joined the Nittany Lions prior to the 2017-18 season and has brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Penn State program over the past two seasons, helping the Nittany Lions to back-to-back CHA Semifinal appearances.

"Allison's award is well-deserved," said head coach Jeff Kampersal. "She is a winner every place she has coached.  She is a great teacher of hockey, but more importantly, she is one of the most genuine human beings you will ever meet."

The Nittany Lions are coming off a 13-14-9 season in 2018-19 that included a win over fifth-ranked Colgate, the highest ranked team the Nittany Lions have ever defeated in the program's brief seven-year history.

With Coomey on staff, Penn State has had two student-athletes named All-CHA First Team performers, four All-CHA Second Team honorees, two All-CHA Rookie Team members, and an CHA Rookie of the Year.

Coomey came to the Nittany Lions after spending nine seasons with Boston University where she helped the Terriers qualify for the NCAA Tournament six times. While at BU, Coomey coached four Olympians who combined to win six gold medals for the Canadian National Team at the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

Coomey also has international coaching experience in various roles with USA Hockey. She was most recently a member of USA Hockey's scouting staff at the 2019 IIHF U18 Women's World Championship. She also has experience as a Team USA Camp instructor at the Women's National Festival and Women's National Winter Camp.
