POSTGAME NOTES: Penn State vs. Michigan

TEAM

  • Penn State improves in the series with Michigan to 9-14 and is 6-7 against the Wolverines in Beaver Stadium. The Nittany Lions are 5-1 against the Wolverines in the last six games played at Penn State.
  • Penn State improves to 7-0 to start the season for the first time since 2017 and the fifth time since joining the Big Ten.
  • With the win, Penn State guarantees a 15th consecutive winning season. With wins today, LSU and Oklahoma also clinched a 15th consecutive winning season. Boise State and Wisconsin are at 14 consecutive winning seasons with an opportunity to have 15-straight winning seasons this year.
  • Head Coach James Franklin has guided his teams to a winning record each of the last eight seasons (2 at Vanderbilt, 6 at Penn State).
  • Penn State defeated ranked opponents in back-to-back games (No. 17 Iowa, 17-12; No. 16 Michigan, 28-21) for the first time since 2005 when the Nittany Lions topped No. 18 Minnesota (44-14) and No. 6 Ohio State (17-10) in consecutive weeks.
  • The Nittany Lions defeated the No. 16 ranked team for the first time since topping Purdue in West Lafayette in 1999.

  • Tonight's attendance of 110,669 was the fourth largest in Beaver Stadium history and the most since 110,889 packed Beaver Stadium last year vs. Ohio State. It also marks the 10th-largest crowd to watch Penn State in any stadium.

Sean Clifford

  • QB Sean Clifford threw for three touchdowns and rushed for one score, the third time in his career he had a rushing and passing touchdown in the same game.
  • Clifford had three touchdown passes for the fourth time in his career.
  • Clifford notched the fifth multi-touchdown pass game of his career with his three touchdown passes.
  • Clifford's three touchdown passes boost his season total to 16, moving him into a tie for 17th place with Christian Hackenberg (16, 2015). He passed Matt McGloin (14, 2010), Rashard Casey (14, 2000), Chuck Fusina (15, 1977) and John Hufnagel (15, 1972).
  • With his 17 yards rushing, Clifford now has 266 yards rushing in his career, which is good for 12th place on the Penn State career quarterback rushing list. He passed Tom Sherman (262 yards) and now trails Dick Hoak, who had 284 yards rushing while as a quarterback for one season in 1960.
  • Clifford's 17 rushing yards give him 269 this year, moving him from 14th place to 12th on the single season quarterback rushing list. He passed Pete Liske (255 yards, 1962) and Michael Robinson (263 yards, 2002).

 
KJ Hamler

  • WR KJ Hamler notched his second career two touchdown receiving game.
  • Hamler had 108 receiving yards, his fourth career 100-yard receiving game and his first since he had 108 receiving yards at Maryland earlier this season.
  • Hamler extended his streak to all 20 games of his career with a catch.
  • Hamler's 108 yards receiving give him 1,317 yards for his career, boosting him into 20th place at Penn State. Hamler passes David Daniels (1,222 yards), DeAndre Thompkins (1,245) and Scott Fitzkee (1,263). Just ahead of him on the list is Ted Kwalick (1,343 yards).

 
Pat Freiermuth

  • TE Pat Freiermuth's first quarter touchdown catch was his fourth of the season and 12th of his career.
  • Freiermuth extended his streak to 19 consecutive games with a catch, and 19 of his first 20 career games

  • WR Jahan Dotson's 37 receiving yards give him 501 yards for his career.

Tariq Castro-Fields

  • CB Tariq Castro-Fields grabbed his third career interception and second of the season in the second quarter.
  • Castro-Fields tied a career high with eight tackles. He had eight tackles against Buffalo earlier this year.

 
Micah Parsons

  • LB Micah Parsons recorded 14 tackles, tying his career high set last year vs. Kentucky in the Citrus Bowl.
  • The 14 tackles by Parsons marked his third game with at least 10 tackles.

 
Cam Brown

  • LB Cam Brown tied his career high for the third time with 10 tackles.

 
Shaka Toney

  • DE Shaka Toney notched a career-best seven tackles. He previous career high was six at Indiana in 2018.
