POSTGAME NOTES: Penn State vs. Purdue

TEAM

  • Penn State leads the series with Purdue 15-3-1.
  • The Nittany Lions moved to 9-1 all-time on the home against Purdue.
  • Penn State is now 72-23-5 in 100 Homecoming games.
  • The Nittany Lions have won their last 11 games against Big Ten West opponents. Penn State's last loss to a West Division opponent was at Northwestern in 2015.
  • The win marked Coach James Franklin's 50th win at Penn State. He is now 50-21 (71 games) in six years at the helm of the Nittany Lions. Franklin is the second-fastest coach to 50 wins in Penn State history, trailing only Joe Paterno, who had 50 wins in his first 61 games as head coach of the Nittany Lions.
  • The Nittany Lions' 21 first quarter points are the most in an opening stanza since scoring 21 vs. Kent State in the first period last season. It also marks the most first quarter points in a Big Ten game since notching 28 vs. Indiana in the opening stanza of 2017.
  • Penn State's 94 points in consecutive Big Ten games is the highest two-game point total in consecutive Big Ten games since the Nittany Lions scored 129 in the last conference game of 2017 at Maryland and the 2018 Big Ten opener at Illinois (66 at Maryland and 63 at Illinois).
  • Penn State once again held its opponent scoreless in the first quarter and are now the only team in the country to not allow any first quarter points this season, as both Oklahoma and Missouri gave up opening stanza scores today.
  • Dating back to last year, Penn State has held its last seven regular-season opponents to 13 points or less.
  • The seven points allowed by Penn State in the last two Big Ten games (0 at Maryland, 7 vs. Purdue) is the fewest allowed in a two-game stretch in Big Ten games in a single season since joining the conference in 1993. The previous low was allowing 10 in two consecutive games on two occasions (last in 2018).
  • The seven points allowed in the last two games is the fewest allowed in any two-game stretch by the Nittany Lions since giving up just three to Eastern Illinois and Minnesota in 2009 (3 vs. Eastern Illinois, 0 vs. Minnesota).
  • Penn State held Purdue to minus-19 yards rushing, the fewest rushing yards allowed by a Nittany Lion defense since holding Maryland to minus-32 in 1978.
  • The minus-19 yards rushing allowed is the second-lowest rushing yards allowed in an FBS game this season, trailing the minus-73 yards allowed by Michigan State against Tulsa in the season opener.
  • The minus-19 yards rushing is the fewest allowed by Penn State in a Big Ten game. The previous low was minus-12 yards rushing allowed to Purdue in 1998.
  • The minus-19 yards rushing allowed is the fifth-fewest rushing yards allowed by Penn State since 1947.
  • Penn State limited Purdue to eight first downs, the third time this season that the Nittany Lions have held a team to 10 or fewer first downs (5 vs. Idaho, 10 at Maryland)
  • The eight first downs given up is tied for the fifth-fewest allowed by the Nittany Lions in a Big Ten game (8 vs. Iowa in 1996, 8 vs. Iowa in 2007).
  • The eight first downs allowed is the second-lowest allowed by Penn State in a Big Ten contest under Coach James Franklin (5 at Rutgers, 2016) and is tied for the third fewest overall allowed under Franklin.
  • The 104 yards allowed by Penn State is the second-lowest total in a Big Ten game and the fewest since giving up 87 to Rutgers in 2016.
  • The 104 yards allowed are the third-fewest since 2000.
  • Penn State has now held three opponents under 150 yards of total offense this season (145, Idaho; 128, Maryland; 104, Purdue). This is the first time since at least 1982 the Nittany Lions have held three opponents to less than 150 yards in a season.
  • The Nittany Lions recorded 10 sacks, the most for Penn State since the school record of 11 against Illinois in 1999.
  • The 10 sacks are tied for the most in FBS in a single game this season. Penn State is tied with SMU and Florida.
  • Penn State had 13 TFL, giving them at least 10 TFLs in four of the five games this season.
  • Penn State's 46 rushing attempts mark the 10th highest total under Coach James Franklin, and the most since 47 rushing attempts vs. Wisconsin last season.
  • Penn State's missed field goal in the second quarter marked the first time the Nittany Lions did not convert a red zone trip this season. Including two trips to the red zone before the missed field goal, Penn State had been 21-21 this season and the Nittany Lions finished the day at 22-23 for the year.
  • WR Daniel George earned his first career start, the 12th first-time starter for Penn State this season (8 offense, 3 defense, 1 special teams).
  • Five players made their Nittany Lion debuts: DL Hakeem Beamon, WR John Dunmore, CB Daequan Hardy, WR TJ Jones and S Tyler Rudolph.
  • Beamon, Dunmore, Hardy, Jones and Rudolph are five of 33 players who have made their Penn State debuts this season.
  • They are also five of 18 true freshmen who have played this year and 28 players who have made their college debut.
  • Penn State heads to Iowa for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with the Hawkeyes next Saturday. The game will be televised on ABC, FS1 or BTN.

 
 
OFFENSE
 
Sean Clifford

  • QB Sean Clifford threw for 264 yards, completing 20-of-29 passes with three touchdowns.
  • Clifford is the third Penn State quarterback to have three games with 250 more passing yards and three or more passing touchdowns in a season, joining Trace McSorley (2017, 4 games) and Christian Hackenberg (2013, 3 games) as the only Lions to accomplish the feat. 
  • Clifford connected with KJ Hamler on a 23-yard touchdown and Jahan Dotson on a 72-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Clifford added a 7-yard touchdown pass to Pat Freiermuth in the second quarter.
  • Clifford also ran for a 3-yard score.
  • Clifford's 72-yard completion to Dotson is Penn State's longest pass play this season.
  • Clifford's two touchdowns in the first quarter marked his fourth multi-touchdown pass quarter this year (2nd quarter vs. Idaho, 3rd quarter vs. Buffalo, 2nd quarter vs. Maryland).
  • Clifford threw for three touchdowns in the first half, his third half this year with three passing touchdowns (2nd half vs. Buffalo, 1st half vs. Maryland)
  • Clifford has at least 200 yards passing in all five of his career starts.
  • Clifford had three passing touchdowns, giving him at least two passing touchdowns in four career games.
  • Clifford had at least one passing and rushing touchdown for the second-straight game.
  • With five 200-yard passing games this season, Clifford is tied for 17th all-time at Penn State with John Hufnagel (1972), Chuck Fusina (1977), Doug Strang (1983), Zack Mills (2001, 2002) and Matt McGloin (2010).
  • With three passing touchdowns, Clifford now has 14 career touchdown passes, tying John Sacca (1991-93) for 20th all-time at Penn State.
  • Clifford has 23 completions of 20 or more yards this season.
  • With 33 rushing yards, Clifford now has 200 rushing yards this season, ranking 16th in season rushing yards by a quarterback at Penn State.  He is one yard behind Zack Mills (2002) for 15th.

 
Noah Cain

  • RB Noah Cain had a career-best 105 yards on the ground, his first career 100-yard game. His previous best was 44 rushing yards vs. Idaho.
  • Cain had a career-long 27-yard rush in the fourth quarter. His previous long was a 9-yard rush vs. Idaho.
  • Cain also had a career-long 20-yard reception in the second quarter. His previous best was a 13-yard grab vs. Maryland last week.
  • The freshman scored on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter, his fourth rushing touchdown this season.
  • Cain established career highs with three catches for 25 yards. His previous highs were one catch, twice with the last coming against Maryland, and 13 yards, against Pittsburgh.

 
KJ Hamler

  • WR KJ Hamler extended his streak to all 18 games of his career with at least one catch with his first quarter touchdown grab.
  • WR KJ Hamler scored on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Clifford in the first quarter, his ninth career touchdown reception. Hamler is tied for 22nd all-time in career touchdown receptions, matching Ray Roundtree (1984-87), David Daniels (1988-90), Eric McCoo (1998-01), Kyle Brady (1991-94) and Derrick Williams (2005-08).
  • With 41 receiving yards on the day, Hamler now has 1,148 for his career, moving into 25th all-time at Penn State. On the day, he passed Andrew Quarless (1,146; 2006-09), Eddie Drummond (1,132, 1998-01) and Juwan Johnson (1,123, 2016-18).

Jahan Dotson

  • WR Jahan Dotson had a career-long 72-yard catch in the first quarter for a touchdown. Dotson's previous longest reception was a 56-yard grab against Buffalo earlier this season.
  • Dotson's 72-yard reception is Penn State's longest this season.

Daniel George

  • WR Daniel George tied a career high with two catches.  He also had two grabs against Idaho.

 
Pat Freiermuth

  • TE Pat Freiermuth had three catches, giving him at least one catch in 17 consecutive games (17-of-18 for his career).
  • Freiermuth caught a 7-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. It was Freiermuth's third touchdown catch this season and the 11th of his career.
  • With 11 career touchdown receptions, Freiermuth moved into a tie for 13th all-time at Penn State with Tony Johnson (2000-03), Scott Fitzkee (1975-78), Freddie Scott (1993-95) and Jesse James (2012-14).  Freiermuth is tied with James for second among Penn State tight ends. Freiermuth is four touchdowns behind Mike Gesicki (2014-17).

 
Devyn Ford

  • RB Devyn Ford had a 20-yard run in the fourth quarter, his third run of 20 or more yards this season.

 
Nick Bowers

  • TE Nick Bowers matched a career-high with three receptions.  He had two previous games with three catches with the last against Kentucky in the Citrus Bowl.
  • Bowers had a 48-yard reception in the first quarter.

 
 
DEFENSE
 
Lamont Wade

  • S Lamont Wade had a career-high 11 tackles. His previous best was five tackles on two occasions, the last vs. Nebraska in 2017.
  • Wade tied a career high with one sack. He also had one vs. Kent State in 2018.
  • Wade also tied a career high with one pass breakup, the fourth time he had one pass breakup in a game. His last breakup was vs. Nebraska in 2017.

 
Yetur Gross-Matos

  • DE Yetur Gross Matos tied a career high with two sacks. He previously had two sacks on two occasions, last vs. Iowa in 2018.
  • Gross-Matos earned his fourth career game with 2.0 or more sacks and his seventh game with 2.0 or more tackles for loss.

 
Shaka Toney

  • DE Shaka Toney had three sacks, one off of his career best mark of four set at Indiana last season.
  • Toney earned his third career game with two or more sacks and his fifth career game with two or more tackles for loss.

 
Brandon Smith

  • LB Brandon Smith had a career-best four tackles. His previous career high was three on two occasions, last vs. Buffalo earlier this season.

 
Micah Parsons

  • LB Micah Parsons tied a career high with one sack. He had one sack at Rutgers last year.
  • Parsons also tied a career high with two TFL. He had two on three previous occasions, the last vs. Pittsburgh earlier this season.

 
Fred Hansard

  • DT Fred Hansard notched the first sack of his career.

 
PJ Mustipher

  • DT PJ Mustipher recorded the first sack of his career.
  • Mustipher tied a career high with one TFL. He had recorded one TFL on two prior occasions, the last vs. Buffalo earlier this season.

 

John Reid

  • CB John Reid recorded one tackle to reach the 100-career tackle-mark.
  • With two pass breakups, Reid now has 33 passes defended (26 pbu, 7 int) for his career, moving into a tied for 12th all-time at Penn State with Shelly Hammonds (1990-93).

 
Jaquan Brisker

  • S Jaquan Brisker recorded his first career pass breakup in the third quarter.

 
DJ Brown

  • CB DJ Brown forced the first fumble of his career late in the fourth quarter.
