Penn State Travels to Georgetown for 2019 Gavitt Tipoff Game

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Penn State men's basketball team will play at Georgetown on on Thursday, Nov 14 in Capital One Arena in Washington D.C. as part of the 2019 Gavitt Tipoff Games. The Big Ten and Big East conference offices jointly announced the game dates and opponents Wednesday.

"With how the Gavitt Games and league schedule worked out this year, this was the ideal opportunity to bring our team to play in front of our Penn State alumni and fans in the D.C.-Maryland-Virginia metro area," said Penn State coach Patrick Chambers. "This series and great matchups like ours pay homage to Dave Gavitt, a man who had a tremendous impact on the sport of basketball at every level."

The unique series between the two conferences was named to honor the late Dave Gavitt, the founder of the Big East Conference and basketball visionary. Gavitt was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.

The eight Gavitt Tipoff Games will be played on four-consecutive days in the first full week of the 2019 college basketball season beginning on Monday, Nov. 11.

The contest between the Nittany Lions and the Hoyas marks the first time the two programs have met since 2004. Penn State and Georgetown played two games in back-to-back seasons in 2003-04 and 2004-05 following a 27-year gap. Only 11 of the 42 games in the series have been played over the last 50 years. Penn State has a 22-20 lead in the overall series.

The Gavitt Tipoff Games feature four home contests each for Big East and Big Ten institutions on an annual basis through 2022. Television coverage of the Gavitt Tipoff Games will be provided by either FS1 or BTN.

The Nittany Lions met DePaul in their first two Gavitt Games appearances, splitting those games with a win at the Bryce Jordan Center in 2015 and overtime loss in Chicago in November 2018.
