UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State's Stephen Nedoroscik was named the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) National Specialist of the Week on Wednesday. The senior earned the award after scoring a personal-best 15.5 on pommel horse in the prelims of the West Point Open on Friday.
Nedoroscik, a two-time NCAA champion and three-time All-American, turned in the nation's best pommel horse routine since Ohio State's Alec Yoder scored a 15.5 on Jan. 20, 2018. Nedoroscik went on to win the national title that season while Yoder was an All-American with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
The nation's next-best pommel horse routine from the first two weeks of this season – other than Nedoroscik's 14.8 in the finals the day after his 15.5 – was a 14.2 from his teammate, Nick Mock.
Penn State dominated pommel horse at the West Point Open with a 70.400. That's easily the best score in the nation this season. Four Lions rank in the top 10, including Jack Baldwin (13.750) in seventh and Favian Valdez (13.650) in eighth.
The Lions host Army West Point for their home opener at Rec Hall on Saturday. The meet is scheduled for 4 p.m.
