UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 2 Penn State men's lacrosse team picked up two weekly awards from the Big Ten on Tuesday after rolling to a 16-9 season-opening win over Lafayette over the weekend. Senior Grant Ament was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while senior Gerard Arceri was selected as the Specialist of the Week.
Ament totaled more points than any player in the nation during the opening weekend of play with 10 points on four goals and six assists. It tied for the 11th-most points in a single game in program history and gave him 250 for his career. He needs just three to pass Gary Martin (1981-84) to become the program's all-time leader.
Arceri was dominant against the Leopards, winning 19 of 21 faceoffs. He led all players with 15 ground balls and broke the school's career record during the game. He now has 450 for his career, passing Chris Marcus, who tallied 440 from 1990-93. Arceri had the most ground balls and best faceoff winning percentage of any player in the nation during the opening weekend of play.
Penn State returns to action with a road game against Villanova on Saturday at 1 p.m. It is the season opener for the Wildcats, who went 8-7 overall and 3-2 in the Big East last year.
