Women’s Fencing Perfect at Duke

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The sixth ranked Penn State women's fencing team finished up their weekend in Durham, N.C. at the Duke Invitational on Sunday. The team defeated all of its opponents including MIT, Brandeis, North Carolina, Notre Dame, and Duke. This is the third consecutive year that the women's team has gone unbeaten at this event.
 
The women started the day with a 20-7 win over MIT. Nirali Igoe (Washington, D.C.), Medora McCarthy (Los Altos Hills, Calif.), Axelle Wasiak (Vlaams-Brabant, Belgium), Sofia McGoff-Medero (Gurabo, Puerto Rico), Zara Moss (Cranberry Township, Pa.), and Kelli Wozniak (Westerville, Ohio) all posted 2-0 shutout performances in the early going.
 
The second round saw Penn State grab it's second 20-7 victory of the day against Brandeis. Junior fencer Pauline Conscience (Paris, France) led the way in saber going 3-0, while foil fencers Jade Rowland (Princeton Junction, N.J.), and Isabella Zuzulo (Newtown, Pa.) both went 2-0.
 
In the third round, North Carolina fell victim to Penn State's third consecutive 20-7 win. Lodovica Bicego(Vicenza, Italy) contributed a 3-0 shutout performance against the Tar Heels.
 
The fourth round dual featured a ranked matchup as the Nittany Lions took to the strip against third-ranked Notre Dame. Penn State came out on top with a 15-12 victory over the Irish.
 
To close out the day, the women defeated Duke 18-9.
