OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Penn State men's ice hockey senior captain Alex Limoges (Winchester, Va.) is one of 15 student-athletes across the nation who have been named a candidate for the 2020-21 Senior CLASS award as announced on Friday morning.
"Limo is the epitome of a student-athlete and leader, executing all three at the absolute highest level," mentioned head coach Guy Gadowsky. "He entered Penn State as an extremely humble, hard-working student-athlete, and with great success at the Big Ten and National level that attitude has not changed and is one of the reasons he was a unanimous selection for team captain. Limo is a perfect representative for Penn State Hockey."
Limoges becomes the fifth Penn State men's hockey student-athlete to be nominated for this prestigious award, joining 2015-16 recipient David Glen '16, Luke Juha '16, 2016-17 finalist David Goodwin '17 and 2018-19 finalist Chase Berger '19.
The Senior CLASS Award is presented annually to an individual who excels on the field, in the community and in the classroom all while having strong leadership qualities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
CLASS is an acronym which stands for "Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School" while the award takes a focus on the total student-athlete and his performances on and off the ice.
Limoges is one of seven Big Ten student-athletes to be recognized as a candidate joining Notre Dame teammates Pierce Crawford and Matt Hellickson, Minnesota teammates Jack LaFontaine, Brannon McManus and Scott Ready and Ohio State's Austin Pooley.
Not only has Limoges has only missed five games in his entire Penn State career he currently ranks third among all active players in the NCAA with 119 career points, a mark good for the most in the Big Ten while his 50 career goals are good for second among active players and tops in the Big Ten.
Limoges is currently third on the Penn State all time points list and tied for fourth on the all-time goals list.
Not only is he a force on the ice, but the supply chain management major has a cumulative 3.67 grade point average including an impressive 3.81 GPA last semester with no pass/fail classes on his schedule.
The Winchester, Va. native has also been a part of numerous community service initiatives in his hometown including volunteering at Camp Fantastic, a summer camp for children with cancer. Also, last summer when the COVID-19 pandemic was at its peak, Limoges volunteered to go grocery shopping for the elderly.
Prior to the pandemic, Limoges and his teammates would spend a few days a week reading to elementary school classes for a reading rewards program that former teammates Ricky DeRosa '17 and Chase Berger '19 began.
The 15 candidates will be narrowed to ten finalists later this month. Those ten names will then be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character, and competition.
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2021 NCAA Men's Frozen Four in April.
