OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Penn State men's ice hockey senior captain Alex Limoges (Winchester, Va.) was named one of 10 finalists for the 2020-21 Senior CLASS award as announced earlier this week.
"Limo is the epitome of a student-athlete and leader, executing all three at the absolute highest level," mentioned head coach Guy Gadowsky. "He entered Penn State as an extremely humble, hard-working student-athlete, and with great success at the Big Ten and National level that attitude has not changed and is one of the reasons he was a unanimous selection for team captain. Limo is a perfect representative for Penn State Hockey."
Limoges becomes the fifth Penn State men's hockey student-athlete to be nominated for this prestigious award and the fourth to be named a finalist, joining 2015-16 recipient David Glen '16, 2016-17 finalist David Goodwin '17 and 2018-19 finalist Chase Berger '19.
The Senior CLASS Award is presented annually to an individual who excels on the field, in the community and in the classroom all while having strong leadership qualities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
CLASS is an acronym which stands for "Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School" while the award takes a focus on the total student-athlete and his performances on and off the ice.
Limoges is one of five Big Ten student-athletes to be named a finalist joining Notre Dame's Matt Hellickson and Minnesota teammates Jack LaFontaine, Brannon McManus and Scott Ready.
Not only has Limoges missed just five games in his entire Penn State career, he currently ranks fourth among all active players in the NCAA with 119 career points, a mark good for the most in the Big Ten while his 50 career goals are good for third among active players and tops in the Big Ten.
Limoges is currently third on the Penn State all time points list and tied for fourth on the all-time goals list.
Not only is he a force on the ice, but the supply chain management major has a cumulative 3.67 grade point average including an impressive 3.81 GPA last semester with no pass/fail classes on his schedule.
The Winchester, Va. native has also been a part of numerous community service initiatives in his hometown including volunteering at Camp Fantastic, a summer camp for children with cancer. Also, last summer when the COVID-19 pandemic was at its peak, Limoges volunteered to go grocery shopping for the elderly.
Prior to the pandemic, Limoges and his teammates would spend a few days a week reading to elementary school classes for a reading rewards program that former teammates Ricky DeRosa '17 and Chase Berger '19 began.
The finalists were chosen by a selection committee from the list of 15 candidates announced earlier in the season. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner, and fans are encouraged to submit votes online at the Senior CLASS Award website through March 29. Fan votes will be combined with those of the media and Division I head coaches to determine the winners.
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2021 NCAA Men's Frozen Four in April.
