UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State goaltender Josie Bothun added to her list of individual awards gathered this season as she was chosen the USCHO.com Rookie of the Year for the 2020-21 season.
The Wyoming, Minnesota native had a spectacular freshman season for the Nittany Lions and was a key part in securing Penn State's first-ever CHA regular season championship.
Bothun ranks second in the NCAA in goals-against average at 1.44, wins with 16, and minutes played at 1,254. She shattered several Penn State single-season records for the year, including setting the new single-season wins high for Penn State goaltenders despite playing in a shortened 2020-21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
She was named the CHA Goaltender of the Year and was honored on both the CHA's first team and all-rookie teams. In the first year of the award, Bothun was a top-three finalist for the WHCA's Women's Hockey National Goaltender of the Year award.
An athletic, competitive goaltender with a knack for making big stops in the clutch, Bothun make at least 20 saves in 16 of her 21 starts and had a 5-2 record in one-goal games this season.
Among Bothun's great accomplishments this season was her shutout streak of 263 minutes and 54 seconds, a Penn State record, which included three shutouts between Feb. 9-20.
Bothun was most recently invited to USA Hockey High Performance goaltender camp with 12 of the nation's elite goaltenders March 31-April 2.
Bothun joins freshman forward Kiara Zanon as Penn State's two national rookie of the year winners. Zanon was named the WHCA's national freshman of the year March 17.
