#6 Women's Soccer Hosts Indiana in Big Ten Regional Weekend

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The #6 Penn State women's soccer team (9-1-1, 9-1-1) takes on Indiana in the Big Ten Regional Weekend with a trip to the Big Ten Tournament semifinal on the line.   

Penn State entered the Big Ten Regional weekend as the number one overall seed after clinching its 20th Big Ten regular season title. Indiana advanced to play the Nittany Lions after its match against Michigan was deemed a no contest.

Nittany Lions Last Time Out

  • Penn State's offense was clicking on all cylinders from the opening whistle. The Nittany Lions got on the board in just the third minute of action as Tagliaferri and Schlegel teamed up to find Linnehan as she lifted her shot over the outstretched hands of the Terrapins keeper to make it 1-0.
  • Six minutes later, Tagliaferri scored her first of the game to give Penn State its 2-0 lead.
  • Wasserman scored the final goal of the first half in the 17th minute. Linnehan sent a cross through the box and Wasserman blasted her shot into the corner of the net to make it 3-0 Penn State.
  • The Nittany Lions outshot Maryland 18-6 in the first half and allowed no easy looks for the Terrapins.
  • Immediately out of the half, Schlegel took a pass from Tagliaferri and blasted a left-footed shot into the upper 90 to give the Nittany Lions a 4-0 advantage.  
  • Three minutes after Schlegel's first goal, Tagliaferri scored her second goal of the match. A pretty combo of passes from Schnurr and Sam Coffey led to an open look for Tagliaferri and she buried her shot into the twine to make it 5-0.
  • Schlegel scored for the second time in the 55th minute, sidestepping the Terrapins goalkeeper and curving her shot just inside the far post to give Penn State their final goal of the match and a 6-0 lead.
  • Katherine Asman and Katie Evans combined for the shutout in the 6-0 win as Penn State limited Maryland to only two shots on goal.
  • The Nittany Lions improved to 9-1-1, 9-1-1 following Saturday's win.
  • Penn State improved to 5-0-0 at home this season and 3-0-0 at Jeffrey Field.
  • The Nittany Lions have allowed just one goal in their last five matches and currently have a scoreless streak of 348 minutes without conceding a goal.
  • The last goal allowed by Penn State was in the 12th minute against Michigan on March 21.
  • Following Saturday's performance, Penn State now has three players over 20 points this season. (Ally Schlegel - 23, Sam Coffey - 20 and Frankie Tagliaferri - 21).

BIG TEN CHAMPS

The Penn State women's soccer program clinched its 20th Big Ten regular season championship with a 3-0 win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Sunday, March 28. The regular season title is the 11th under head coach Erica Dambach.

Ally Schlegel scored the 20th goal of her career in the 1-0 win over Iowa. The Nittany Lions have three players that have scored 20 or more goals in their careers (Coffey – 34, Tagliaferri – 23, Schlegel – 22).

BENCH MARKS

Senior Captain Frankie Tagliaferri is the only player in Big Ten history to have four assists in a single game twice.

Tagliaferri is second in the NCAA with 85 career appearances and is seventh on the NCAA active career list with 25 assists.

Sam Coffey is currenlty tied for the NCAA active lead with 110 points in her career. She is the only player in NCAA soccer with 30+ goals and 40+ assists

The #13 Penn State women's soccer team improved to 3-1-0 on the season with a 2-1 win over #24 Indiana Thursday evening. Senior captains Frankie Tagliaferri and Sam Coffey both netted goals in the second half as the Nittany Lions overcame a 1-0 deficit for Penn State's third straight win.
