Sophomore Kateryna Chorniy Earns Gold for the Nittany Lions in Day One of the Temple Open

University Park, Pa. - The Penn State women's fencing teams competed in the first day of the 2021 Temple Open at the Liacouras Center on Temple's main campus, highlighted by strong showings in the foil and epee to open the 2021-2022 season. The event included teams from colleges and universities across the east coast in this tournament style event.

Sophomore Kateryna Chorniy (Kyiv, Ukraine) finished 6-0 earning gold for the women's epee squad. Penn State had a total of four fencers in this weapon with Axelle Wasiak (Vlaams-Brabant, Belgium) finishing 2-1 and Jaclyn Khrol (Brooklyn, N.Y), Jordan Liverant (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and Nirali Igoe (Washington, D.C.) all concluding with a 1-1 record. 

Samantha Catantan (Quezon City, Phillipines) brought home third for the women's foil team, going 4-1 and advancinng to the semifinals. Ari Proietti (Como, Italy) finished the day 3-1, and Ariel Rastep (San Francisco, Calif.) ended with a 2-1 mark. 

In women's saber, Pauline Conscience (Paris, France) went 1-1.
