MISSION VIEJO, Calif. – Penn State men's swimmer Gabe Castaño lowered his Mexican national record in the 50 freestyle and matched the Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) A standard with his 22.01 time. The Nittany Lion achieved the standard at the Marguerite Aquatics Center in Mission Viejo, California, in a time trial Sunday. Castaño now has the opportunity to represent Mexico in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
The Nittany Lion won the 50 freestyle open event Saturday night with a time of 22.06.
The 2020 Olympic Games, which were postponed for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, are scheduled to begin Friday, July 23.
