Penn State Wraps Up Road Swing Wednesday Night at Indiana

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men's basketball team caps off a three-game road swing Wednesday night when the Nittany Lions look for a season sweep of Indiana at 8:30 p.m. on Big Ten Network. The 2021-22 Penn State men's basketball season is presented by Highmark Health.

  • Indiana is 12-1 at home this season and coming off its first home loss of the year Sunday afternoon. The Hoosiers fell 80-62 to visiting Michigan.
  • Indiana will be playing its third-straight home game Wednesday night. The loss to Michigan was preceded by a thrilling 68-65 victory over No. 4 Purdue Thursday.
  • Trayce Jackson-Davis leads Indiana with 18.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game, while Race Thompson (10.7 ppg) and Xavier Johnson (10.2 ppg) follow. Those three Hoosiers were also the leaders in the season's first meeting between Indiana and Penn State, with Jackson-Davis leading the way with 20 points.

AGAINST INDIANA

  • Penn State looks for its first win inside Assembly Hall since 2014 and just its second-ever regular-season sweep of the Hoosiers Wednesday. The Nittany Lions swept the Hoosiers in 2009 for the first time ever (65-55 on Jan. 17 & 61-58 on Feb. 28).
  • Penn State won the season's first meeting 61-58 on Jan. 2 inside the BJC. Jalen Pickett led the Nittany Lions with 15 points while classmates Myles Dread and Sam Sessoms also contributed double-digits off the bench with 12 and 10.

 
FIRST TIME OUT

  • It came down to the wire, but Penn State rode a strong defensive effort to a 61-58 win over the Indiana Hoosiers on Jan. 2 inside the Bryce Jordan Center as the Nittany Lions returned from a 22-day layoff to earn their first Big Ten victory of the season.
  • In a nailbiter that saw eight tie scores and nine lead changes, Penn State led by as much as 10 points midway through the second half before Indiana clawed back to make it a traditional close game between the two teams. The last 11 contents between Penn State and Indiana have been decided by an average of just 4.9 points.
  • Jalen Pickett led the Nittany Lions with 15 points while classmates Myles Dread and Sam Sessoms also contributed double-digits off the bench with 12 and 10, respectively. Dread was 4-for-5 from three-point range.
  • Penn State dominated the glass, out-rebounding Indiana 39-29, led by a game-high 12 rebounds by graduate student and big man John Harrar.
  • Penn State held Indiana nearly 20 points below its season scoring average of 77.2. The Nittany Lions have held six of their last eight opponents at least 10 points under their season scoring average.
  • Penn State shot a season-best 50.0 percentage (11-for-22) from 3-point range. Dread led the Nittany Lions in that effort, finishing 4-for-5 (80 percent) from deep.

LOOKING FOR A SWEEP

  • Penn State has the chance to do what just one other Nittany Lion team has done in the past: complete the regular-season sweep of Indiana.
  • The 2008-09 Penn State team defeated Indiana three times before going on to win the 2009 NIT Championship. The Nittany Lions earned a 65-55 win at Assembly Hall on Jan. 17, 2009, a 61-58 home win on Feb. 28, 2009, and a 66-51 victory at the Big Ten Tournament on March 12, 2009.
  • Penn State looks for just its fourth-ever win inside Assembly Hall Wednesday and first since 2014.

ROAD WARRIORS

  • Due to the postponement of Wednesday Jan. 19's home game vs. Minnesota, Penn State is now playing three-straight road games. The Nittany Lions will be away from the Bryce Jordan Center for four of five contests ranging from Jan. 16 at Ohio State to Feb. 5 at Wisconsin.
