UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State sophomore middle blocker Toby Ezeonu was named the EIVA Offensive Player of the Week for his individual play last weekend as announced by the league Monday afternoon.
Ezeonu had a special performance last Saturday night against No. 3 Long Beach State and powered Penn State to a thrilling 3-2 win on the road.
The North Brunswick, N.J., native had 16 kills without an error on 17 swings to record a .941 hitting percentage. He also had five blocks, including two solo stuffs, to go with a pair of digs and one service ace.
Ezeonu started the night 10-0-10 on his attacks and came up in the clutch when Penn State needed it most. He had five kills and two blocks in the fifth set to separate PSU from the Beach to win the match.
For the weekend, which also included a straight-sets loss to UC Santa Barbara Friday, Ezeonu had 19 kills, a .640 hitting percentage and seven blocks.
The weekly conference award is the first in Ezeonu's career and the second of the season for Penn State after fellow middle blocker Sam Marsh was the OPotW back on Jan. 17.
Ezeonu and the Nittany Lions return home to Rec Hall to begin its EIVA conference slate this weekend, Feb. 4 & 5, against Princeton and George Mason. Friday night's match will be PSU's celebration of the 2021 EIVA championship and will include a banner reveal.
Both matches are set to start at 7 p.m.
