Bothun Named HCA Women's Goaltender of the Year Semifinalist

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State sophomore goaltender Josie Bothun was named a semifinalist for the Hockey Commissioner's Association (HCA) Women's Hockey Goalie of the Year award as announced by the HCA Tuesday afternoon.

Bothun is one of 12 semifinalists recognized as one of the top goaltenders in the country for the 2021-22 season as recognized by a panel of coaches, administrators, and media members across the country.

The Wyoming, Minn. native has had a spectacular sophomore campaign that has led the Nittany Lions to a program-record 18 wins this season, with Bothun earning all those winning decisions.

In all of Penn State's 32 games this season, Bothun has started and achieved an 18-9-5 record with a CHA-best 1.61 GAA. She also ranks second in the nation with nine shutouts, which is a new PSU best and ties the CHA single-season record.

In addition, Bothun has a .925 save percentage and she, along with Penn State's defense, has held opponents to two goals or less in 26 of 32 games this season. She was named the CHA Goaltender of the Week seven times and the CHA Goaltender of the Month three times.

Bothun has set new Penn State highs in just her sophomore season with 13 career shutouts and 34 wins through 53 starts in goal. She has started every game for Penn State since joining the roster for her freshman season in 2020-21.

Bothun was named the CHA Goaltender of the Year and the USCHO.com National Rookie of the Year in 2020-21. In that same season, she was a top-three finalist for the inaugural HCA Women's Hockey Goaltender of the Year award.

Bothun and Penn State begin postseason play in the CHA Tournament semifinals with a matchup against the Mercyhurst Lakers Friday, Feb. 25, at Syracuse's Tennity Ice Pavilion. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
