UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Four members of the NCAA Track & Field team are heading to Birmingham, Ala., for this weekend's NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Competition is scheduled to begin on Friday afternoon with preliminary round competition. Junior Evan Dorenkamp will get things started for the Nittany Lions in the mile semifinals at 5 p.m. ET. Dorenkamp set the Penn State program record in the event earlier this season with a time of 3:55.02. It will mark Dorenkamp's second NCAA Championship appearance as he competed in the 800m run at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2021. The top eight finishers will advance to the mile finals on Saturday at 5 p.m.
The No. 1 ranked Penn State women's 800m group will be in action at 8:45 p.m. ET, with freshman Allison Johnson and senior Victoria Tachinski competing in the semifinals. Johnson enters the meet ranked third in the NCAA in the event, as she set the Penn State program record earlier this season with a time of 2:02.84. She claimed Penn State's sixth consecutive 800m title at the Big Ten Championships last week. Tachinski ranks 11th in the NCAA in the event (2:03.83) and third in program history in the 800m. She claimed the silver medal at the league championships. The 800m finals are scheduled for Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
Mallory Kauffman will represent the Penn State throwers when she competes in the shot put on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET. The junior jumped up the Penn State all-time leaderboards this season, recording the third best throw in program history with a 17.19m throw at the Penn State Tune Up. She enters the NCAA Championships ranked 13th in the nation.
