Penn State Ranks 18th In Learfield Directors’ Cup After First Winter Update

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics sits 18th in the LEARFIELD Directors' Cup Division I standings following the first update including Winter sports.
 
Penn State posted 172 points during the winter championship season, led by wrestling winning its ninth team national title in the last 11 years (10th overall).
 
The wrestling program won the team NCAA Championship in Detroit as five student-athletes won individual NCAA titles: senior Roman Bravo-Young (133), senior Nick Lee (141), sophomore Carter Starocci (174), junior Aaron Brooks (184) and junior Max Dean (197) all claimed national titles. Sophomore Greg Kerkvliet (285) gave the Nittany Lions six All-Americans.
 
The Penn State fencing program earned 72 points this winter after placing sixth in the team standings at the NCAA Championships. Four student-athletes garnered All-America accolades: senior epee Ryan Griffiths, sophomore foil Arwen Borowiak, freshman saber Kamar Skeete and sophomore epee Kateryna Chorniy.
 
Adding to its 298 points in the Fall, Penn State now sits at 470 points, ranking 18th overall.
 
Michigan leads the overall standings with 761 points, followed by Notre Dame (754), Ohio State (701.5), Stanford (690.5) and Texas (679.5).
 
Penn State is one of five Big Ten schools among the Top 25.
 
Another update to the standings will come on April 23. The rankings will also be updated on June 16 and the final standings will be announced in early July following the College World Series.
 
Under the leadership of Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Sandy Barbour, Penn State has one of the nation's most comprehensive and successful athletic programs, featuring 800 student-athletes across 31 varsity programs (16 men's, 15 women's). The Nittany Lions' 31 programs are tied for the fourth-highest number of sports sponsored by a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institution. 
 
Penn State student-athletes have led the athletic department to 49 Big Ten championships and 12 NCAA National Championships in the last 10 years. The Nittany Lions have finished in the top 15 of the LEARFIELD Directors' Cup 19 times in the last 27 years (the Directors' Cup was not awarded in 2019-20).
