UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State men's lacrosse players picked up two Big Ten weekly awards Tuesday for their performance in a 9-8 overtime win over Michigan on Friday. Redshirt junior Aleric Fyock was named the Specialist of the Week, while Will Peden was selected as the Freshman of the Week.
Fyock led an outstanding defensive effort by the Nittany Lions, making 15 saves on 23 chances. The Lions held Michigan well below its season average in scoring. The Wolverines entered as the sixth-best offense in the nation with an average of 15.36 goals per game.
Fyock has won two Big Ten Specialist of the Week awards this season. He ranks first in the Big Ten in saves per game, averaging 12.00.
Peden dished out a pair of assists against Michigan, giving him a team-leading 17 on the season. He also leads Penn State in points with 26 and has won two Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors this season.
Peden's first assist against the Wolverines came on a goal by Mark Sickler that gave Penn State its largest lead of the game at 7-2 early in the third quarter. He added a second helper on Dan Reaume's goal that put the Lions up 8-4 with 47 seconds left in the same quarter.
Four Penn State players have combined for five Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors this season.
The Lions go on the road for their next game as they travel to play Johns Hopkins on Saturday at 6 p.m. The game will air live on ESPNU.
