UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men's golf team is set for its lone home tournament of the 2021-22 season this weekend when the Nittany Lions host the 45th-annual Rutherford Intercollegiate at Penn State's Blue Course Saturday and Sunday.
The 54-hole tournament plays at a par 71 with a 7,171-yard layout with two rounds on Saturday, April 16 and a final 18 holes on Sunday, April 17. Saturday's first round begins at 7:30 a.m. with the second round to follow. The final round Sunday begins at 8:00 a.m. Tee times and pairings for both days will be available on GolfStat.
The 14-team field includes host Penn State, fellow Big Ten institutions Maryland and Michigan State, Bowling Green, Connecticut, Dayton, Eastern Michigan, George Mason, Georgetown, Loyola (Md.), Oakland, Richmond, Saint Mary's and Seton Hall. George Mason is coached by Nittany Lion alumnus Greg Pieczynski '06.
Scores from Patrick Sheehan, Lou Olsakovsky, Jake Griffin, Ben Smith and Jimmy Meyers are eligible to count toward Penn State's team total. Nittany Lions Morgan Lofland, James McHugh, James Allen, Hunter Bruce, Jud Langille and Ryan Lee will participate as individuals.
The Nittany Lions have dominated the Rutherford since it was established as the Nittany Lion Invitational in 1975, winning the tournament 28 times. Twenty Penn State golfers have medaled atop the leaderboard, the last being Cole Miller in 2018.
The tournament became known as the Rutherford Intercollegiate in 1983 to honor R.B. "Pop" Rutherford Sr., the man known to the Nittany Lions as the "father of Penn State golf." Rutherford organized the first Penn State golf team in 1922 and coached it until 1949. R.B. Rutherford Jr. continued his father's coaching tradition from 1950-1956 and furthered a legacy recalled each spring.
Penn State has won six-straight Rutherford Intercollegiate championships heading into this weekend's 45th edition of the event that has become one of the top events in the Northeast. The Nittany Lions won last season's tournament with a team score of 852 thanks in part to a stellar final round that saw Penn State shoot 7-under, 277, on Sunday's final 18 holes. Three Nittany Lions finished in the top 10 individually, led by current junior Patrick Sheehan's second-place finish.
