MONTREAL, Quebec, Canada – Former Nittany Lion captain Brandon Biro '20 was recalled by the Buffalo Sabres from the Rochester Americans on Tuesday afternoon and is expected to make his National Hockey League (NHL) debut on Wednesday evening as the Sabres battle the Canadiens at the Bell Centre at 7:30 p.m.
Biro, who had two stints on the Sabres taxi squad earlier this season, will become the third different Nittany Lion to appear in an NHL contest joining Casey Bailey and Brett Murray. Murray also made his debut for the Sabres late in the 2020-21 season and also appeared in 19 games earlier this season in Buffalo.
Biro signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Sabres following his senior season in 2019-20. Due to an injury last season, Biro appeared in just 15 games with the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League, however, in 39 games this season the Sherwood Park, Alberta native has registered 36 points on nine goals and 27 assists to rank fifth among AHL rookies.
Biro, who served as team captain as a senior in 2019-20, ranks third all-time in assists (75), fifth all-time in points (116) and ninth all-time in goals (41) and is one of just seven Nittany Lions to have a 40 point season which he did as a junior in 2018-19 when he scored 16 goals while adding 24 assists for 40 points.
"We are so proud of Brandon, not only is he a great person and teammate he is the perfect example of doing all you can to reach your goals," mentioned head coach Guy Gadowsky. "It's great to see someone reach this milestone who perseveres, has a great work ethic and is committed to doing everything possible in his power to continue to improve as an athlete and a hockey player."
