UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. –
The Katie Schumacher-Cawley era begins for Penn State women's volleyball this weekend as the Nittany Lions open the 2022 season at Rec Hall with the Penn State Invitational.

Penn State's season opener is against Connecticut on Friday at 7:30 p.m. That match will be the first for Schumacher-Cawley as the head coach at Penn State. The Lions will play two matches on Saturday as they take on Loyola (Md.) at 11 a.m., and West Virginia at 7 p.m. Duquesne will also take part in the event but is not scheduled to play Penn State.

PARKING INFORMATION
• Parking for all Penn State Athletics' non-football events will require a valid permit or payment of the applicable parking fee for campus lots. Fans with valid Penn State University Park parking permits will be permitted to park at non-football athletics events for free, following Transportation Services parking policies and access.
• Parking For women's volleyball matches, fans are asked to park in the Nittany Deck or West Deck. Fans without a permit are encouraged to prepay for event parking at a discounted rate of $6.00 through ParkMobile - https://psu.parkmobile.io/. Prepayment is available through 11:59 p.m. the day prior to each event. Event day parking will be $10 per vehicle and is cash only/can be purchased on the ParkMobile app.

SERIES HISTORY
Connecticut – Penn State is 7-1 in the all-time series. Connecticut won the first meeting in 1977, but the Lions won the next seven. The teams last played in 1997.
Loyola (Md.) – The Lions are 3-0 against the Greyhounds, winning in 1981, 2001 and 2009.
West Virginia – Penn State is 30-0 against West Virginia. The Lions swept the Mountaineers in Morgantown last season.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Connecticut – The Huskies were picked fourth in the Big East Preseason Poll, while Caylee Parker and Kennadie Jake-Turner were selected to the Preseason All-Big East Team. The Huskies went 24-11 overall and 13-5 in the Big East last season.
Loyola (Md.) – The Greyhounds were picked fifth in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, while Katie Forsythe was selected as the league's Preseason Libero of the Year. The Greyhounds went 17-11 overall and 9-7 in the Patriot League last season.
West Virginia – The Mountaineers were picked eighth in the Big 12 Preseason Poll. They went 19-10 overall and 8-8 in the Big 12 last season and played in the NCAA Tournament.
 
SCHUMACHER-CAWLEY ERA BEGINS
Katie Schumacher-Cawley, who helped Penn State win its first women's volleyball national title as a student-athlete in 1999, is set to begin her first season as the head coach in Happy Valley. She has nine years of head coaching experience, including eight at UIC and one at Penn.
• Schumacher-Cawley is the first women's head coach in program history and just the third head coach overall. Tom Tait was the first head coach in program history and held the position from 1976-78. Russ Rose was the second, coaching for 43 seasons from 1979-2021.
• Schumacher-Cawley played for Rose and then returned to Penn State as an assistant coach for four seasons (2018-21).

• Penn State travels to Baton Rouge to play in the Tiger Challenge. The Lions will play Iowa State, Troy, and host LSU at the event.
