No. 12/11 Women's Hockey Sweeps Lindenwood 6-3 on Senior Day

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- A second period comeback by the No. 12/11 ranked Penn State women's ice hockey team propelled them to a 6-3 victory over Lindenwood on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lindenwood jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period off a goal by Morgan Neitzke with 2:34 remaining in the period.
  • The Lions added a second goal with 14:03 remaining in the second period off a goal by Sydney Rarick to put Lindenwood ahead 2-0.
  • Then Penn State fired back with six unanswered goals first coming off the stick of Courtney Correia from Lexi Bedier and Olivia Wallin 9:06 into the period to narrow the Lion lead to 2-1.
  • Wallin would then even up the game at 2-2 off an assist by Eleri MacKay 12:54 into the period.
  • MacKay began the third period in style with a goal 3:14 into the frame off assists by Tessa Janecke and Rene Gangarosa to put the Nittany Lions ahead 3-2.
  • Kiara Zanon then flipped the puck into the net 10:12 into the period to pull the Nittany Lions ahead 4-2.
  • MacKay scored her second goal of the game on the power-play 11:39 into the frame off assists by Mallory Uihlein and Courtney Correia to take a commanding 5-2 lead.
  • Alyssa Machado had the final goal for Penn State coming 15:41 into the period off an assist by Kiara Zanon to take a dominating 6-2 lead.
  • Lindenwood had the final goal of the game off the stick of Thea Jorgensen in the final minute of the game to make the final score 6-3 in favor of Penn State.

GOALTENDING

  • Goalie Josie Bothun captured her 19th win of the season stopping 19 shots on 22 attempted.

GAME NOTES AND STATS

  • Eleri MacKay tallied her second straight three-point game.
  • Kiara Zanon broke the single-season program record for goals in a season with 21 passing her former teammate Natalie Heising.
  • She also passed her own single season record for points with 42.
  • The Nittany Lions dominated the faceoff circle winning 49 on the day.
  • Penn State improved to 20-8-2 on the year and 10-1-1 in CHA play.
  • The Nittany Lions are currently on a 11-game unbeaten streak.
