Penn State Drops Overtime Heartbreaker to Wisconsin

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men's basketball team battled to force overtime against Wisconsin, but the Badgers claimed a 79-74 overtime victory Wednesday night inside the Bryce Jordan Center.

Penn State erased an eight-point deficit with a 7-for-9 showing from 3-point range in the second half, including a game-tying triple from Seth Lundy with 23 seconds left in regulation. The Nittany Lions went cold in the overtime period as Wisconsin snagged the victory.

Jalen Pickett led Pen State with 17 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Camren Wynter followed with 15 points, while Seth Lundy contributed 14 points, nine rebounds, three steals and a block.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Penn State started 3-for-4 from the floor but went cold over the next few minutes as the Badgers were able to take an early 18-12 lead through the first 10 minutes of the game.
  • A Dallion Johnson layup at the 9:50 mark helped the Nittany Lion offense come to life as Penn State made six of its next eight shots to make it a two-point game at 24-22 with 6:32 left on the first-half clock. The Badgers answered with an 11-5 streak over the final five minutes of the half before Pickett tipped in a last-second layup and Wisconsin took a 35-29 lead into halftime.
  • A pair of Andrew Funk free throws and a Jalen Pickett jumper helped the Nittany Lions pull within two just over a minute into the second half. The teams traded buckets for the next 12 minutes, with the Badgers able to maintain a 56-54 advantage with under seven minutes left to play. The Nittany Lions kept pace with a 4-for-6 effort from behind the arc.
  • A floater in the lane from Myles Dread knotted the game at 56. Following a Wisconsin 3-pointer, back-to-back triples from Funk and Seth Lundy gave the Nittany Lions a 62-59 lead with 4:14 left to play.
  • Two lead changes over the next three minutes saw the squads deadlocked at 65 entering the final minute of play.
  • Wisconsin's Chucky Hepburn made a 3-pointer with 33 seconds left to take a 68-65 advantage, before Lundy stepped up and connected on a deep triple of his own just ten seconds later to tie it up with 23 seconds left in regulation. The Penn State defense got the stop it needed on the other end to send the game to overtime at 68-68.
  • The Nittany Lions got good looks that didn't fall in overtime while the Badgers were 3-for-4 from the floor and added four free throws to grab the 79-74 overtime victory.
