No. 5 Men's Lacrosse Falls to Marquette 12-11

LEVITTOWN, N.Y. -  The fifth-ranked Penn State men's lacrosse team fell to Marquette 12-11 in Levittown, N.Y. on Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Penn State opened the game up with a goal off the stick of TJ Malone with 9:21 remaining in the first quarter to put the Nittany Lions ahead 1-0.
  • Marquette countered with a goal two minutes after with 7:18 remaining to even the score at 1-1.
  • Ethan Long put the Nittany Lions back in the lead with 5:35 remaining to make the score 2-1 in favor of Penn State.
  • Marquette then scored three answered goals first with 2:40 remaining in the first quarter from Devon Cowan to tie the game up at 2-2.
  • Cowan and Grant Evans added two more in the second quarter to take a 4-2 lead with 14:06 remaining in the frame.
  • Penn State added three unanswered goals of their own off the sticks of Jake Morin, Chris Jordan and Malone to regain the lead with 4:09 left in the half.
  • Marquette closed out the half with two goals by Andrew Bowman and Will Foster to take a 6-5 lead.
  • Marquette began the second half with a goal off the stick of Nolan Rappis to give the Golden Eagles a 7-5 lead with 14:09 remaining in the third quarter.
  • TJ Malone then tacked on his second goal of the game with 11:41 remaining in the third to cut the Marquette lead to 7-6.
  • Following a pair of goals by both teams, Marquette added two more goals in the third to take a 10-7 lead heading into the final quarter.
  • Jack Traynor opened the scoring in the fourth with 12:54 remaining to cut the Marquette lead to 10-8
  • Both sides added a goal before Cowan scored a goal with 1:18 remaining to give Marquette a 12-9 lead.
  • Mac Costin and Matt Traynor scored the final goals of the game to result in the 12-11 loss.

GOALTENDING

  • Jack Fracyon allowed 12 goals on 23 shots and dropped his record to 5-2 on the year. 

STATS AND NOTES

  • TJ Malone tallied seven points off two goals and a career-high five assists.
  • Penn State dropped its first game since February 12.
  • This is the first loss to Marquette in program history.
