UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The eighth-ranked Penn State men's lacrosse team rallied to an 12-11 double overtime victory over sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins on Saturday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Johns Hopkins opened the first quarter with four unanswered goals to take a commanding 4-0 lead after one. All four goals were scored by Russell Melendez.
- After the Blue Jays opened the second quarter with a goal, the Nittany Lions fired back with four goals including two off the stick of Matt Traynor to narrow the Johns Hopkins lead to 5-4.
- Penn State closed out the half with three unanswered goals including two off the stick of TJ Malone to send the game into the third quarter with Penn State ahead 7-6.
- A total of three goals were scored in the third quarter with two coming from Penn State off the sticks of Malone and Jake Morin to put Penn State ahead 9-7 heading into the final frame.
- After Malone scored his fourth goal of the game to put Penn State ahead 10-7 with 12:58 left in the fourth, Johns Hopkins went on a four-goal scoring run to retake the lead to 11-10 in favor of the Blue Jays with 4:20 remaining in regulation.
- Then Kevin Winkoff would score the game tying goal to send the game into overtime with 2:07 remaining in regulation.
- After a scoreless first overtime period, Winkoff found the back of the net again with 0:52 seconds remaining to give Penn State the 12-11 double overtime victory.
GOALTENDING
- Sophomore goalie Jack Fracyon picked up his seventh victory of the season as he recorded 16 saves on 27 shots taken.
STATS AND NOTES
- This is the fifth multiple overtime game in program history.
- TJ Malone tallied his second four goal game this season.
- Malone currently has 95 career goals.
- Kevin Winkoff scored his first game-winning goal of the season.
- Freshman Chase Mullins recorded 19 faceoff wins which ties a single-game high.
- Penn State is now 5-0 at home and 7-3 overall.
