UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State men's basketball guard Andrew Funk has signed an NBA Summer League deal with the Denver Nuggets.
Funk will get his chance in the league with the same squad as his Nittany Lion teammate Jalen Pickett who was drafted by the defending NBA Champion Nuggets with the 32nd overall pick in Thursday night's NBA Draft. The Denver duo will join former Penn State teammate Seth Lundy (Atlanta Hawks) as they begin their first years in the league. The trio joins Lamar Stevens, who recently wrapped up his third season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, as active Nittany Lion alumni in the NBA. The Nuggets' front office is led by General Manager and Nittany Lion alumnus Calvin Booth '98.
Funk proved to be the most lethal 3-point shooter in the Big Ten during the 2022-23 season, leading the conference and ranking top 25 in the nation in both 3FG% (41.2%) and 3-pointers made per game (3.03). Funk's 112 triples during the 2022-23 season led the Big Ten and were the second-most in a single season in school history. The Warrington, Pa. native finished his graduate season at Penn State averaging 12.5 points per game while tallying 25 double-digit scoring games and eight 20-point performances. He shot a career-best 44.4 percent from the field and 41.2 percent from 3-point range.
Funk finished his five-year collegiate career with marks of 1,693 points (11.5 ppg), 457 rebounds, 237 assists and 302 3-pointers. He played four seasons at Bucknell before playing his graduate season at Penn State and earning his master's degree in management and organizational leadership. He earned All-Big Ten honorable mention laurels at Penn State as well as a spot on the Academic All-District team.
Funk's outstanding 2022-23 season helped lead Penn State to a 23-14 overall record, its first NCAA Tournament victory since 2001 and first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2011. He set a Penn State record in an NCAA Tournament game with 27 points and eight 3-pointers in the Nittany Lions' NCAA Tournament First Round win over Texas A&M.
Penn State enters its first season under Peter and Ann Tombros Endowed Head Coach Mike Rhoades in 2023-24. A proven winner and a Pennsylvania native, Rhoades has produced a 373-189 record in 19 seasons as a collegiate head coach with seven NCAA Tournament appearances and nine national postseason appearances.
