KICKIN' IT
Penn State hits the pitch following a dramatic 1-0 home victory over the UCF Knights on Thursday, Aug. 31. Penn State climbed to 4-0-1 overall and secured its fourth consecutive win, including the third straight victory against an opponent that was either ranked or receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll.PSU's dominance inside the friendly confines of Jeffrey Field continues, with the Blue & White boasting a 3-0-1 ledger at home after the result against UCF. The Nittany Lions have yet to concede a goal on their home pitch in the 2023 season, holding their first four visiting opponents scoreless to open a campaign for the first time since 2011. In the 30-year varsity history of Penn State women's soccer, just the 2000, 2011 and 2023 teams have accomplished that feat.

MIEKE MAGIC
Junior defender Mieke Schiemann accepted a pinpoint pass from senior+ forward Payton Linnehan and housed the match-winning goal in the 88th minute, propelling Penn State to a 1-0 win over the UCF Knights on Thursday, Aug. 31. With UCF forced to play shorthanded due to a red card issued to fifth-year midfielder Sanja Homann, Penn State was able to rack up dominant statistical advantages across the board. The Nittany Lions totaled 26 shots on the night, a season-high against Division I opposition, while registering a dozen shots on goal. The Knights tallied just four total shots with three on-target attempts by comparison. PSU also dominated the corner kick battle, 9-2, outpacing its opponent in the category for just the second time this year.

GETTING DEFENSIVE
The Nittany Lions boast one of the most effective defensive units in the nation through the first five matches of the season, tied for the top spot in the Big Ten and 16th nationally in terms of goals-against average with a 0.200 mark.PSU's shutout percentage is tied for the league lead in the Big Ten and ranks eighth in Division I, boasting a 0.800 mark overall. The Nittany Lions have shutout four opponents and have yet to surrender a goal on Jeffrey Field, outscoring opponents by a 10-0 margin at home. Between the posts, Penn State goalkeepers have published a dominant season through the first four matches of the year, stopping 93.8% of opponent shots on target. PSU's save percentage leads the Big Ten Conference and ranks 12th nationally.

HERALDING THE HAWKS
Second-year head coach Kylee Flynn leads Monmouth into Sunday's tilt with a 1-2 overall record coming off a dominant season a year ago in CAA competition. The Hawks brought home the league's regular season crown, but dropped a first round test in their conference tournament. Monmouth started the season with a narrow loss to Lehigh and responded with a dominant win over FDU before dropping a 3-0 match to Princeton on the road. Freshman midfielder Liza Suydam has burst onto the scene for Monmouth this year, registering a pair of goals this season to place her at the top of the roster in total points with four. Goalkeeper Cassie Coster is the only shot stopper to appear for the Hawks this year, booking 10 saves.

STORY OF THE SERIES
The Nittany Lions and Hawks prepare for the fifth all-time meting of the two programs in women's soccer, with PSU boasting a perfect 4-0-0 record through the first four contests. Penn State and Monmouth will meet in the regular season for just the second time, with Monmouth making the return trip to Happy Valley after PSU visited the Jersey shore last year. Penn State has played the Hawks at Jeffrey Field on three prior occasions, all in NCAA Tournament competition, with the Nittany Lions outscoring Monmouth by a 10-1 margin in those three contests, with Monmouth's only score coming in the 2021 tourney.
